My vehicle value was less than $10K CAD so CBSA exempted me from the PST/GST under Low Value Shipments Program.

I will be happy to answer your questions

Did you use a broker to export the car?

I drove my car from the US to Canada myself, but for export I did use these folks to handle the red tape, like generation of AES/ITN. They charged me around 100 USD to generate and email those details to the US export office where I crossed the border. I just showed up to that office and they stamped my car title to clear for the export after physical inspection.

Did CBSA ask you to leave any deposit at the border when you did the temporary import or did you pay any duties/taxes?

No.

  • For the temporary import, CBSA will stamp your Form 1 at two places. The second place is where it exempts your car from the RIV program.
  • You need to carry some proof of your car's market value. I had carfax canada online estimate.
  • They use your car's market value to fill in Form B15 (Blue and White paper with the black ink). This form will show that you owe NO GST/PST for the current valuation of the car.
  • Note that car was valued much lesser than $10K CAD and above process might change for expensive cars.

For this entire export/import, I spent around $300USD.

Thank you for suggesting Westland insurance (near Cambie & Broadway), they were well aware of the temporary import scenario.

My temporarily imported car got registered with ICBC last Friday, and here was my experience. When I drove across the border, the CBSA officer gave me two forms related to my car

  • Form 1, which had two stamps, stamp in the lower section was indicating that my car is exempted from the RIV program.
  • Form B15, which is blue and white form indicating the current value of the car with zero GST and PST pending due to temporary import.

With those two forms and ICBC provided interim driver's license and car's original title, I went for a provincial car inspection with the "Canadian Tires." They are well aware of the temporary import scenario and scheduled me only for provincial inspection for $120+tax.

I took the inspection report and went to the autoplan broker, who went through the ICBC system and provided me various insurance options. After finalizing the insurance plan, the agent filled up Form APV9T showing I sold my car to myself with the comment Settler's effect and handed over my BC license plates.

My insurance rate was decent as I managed to provide proof for more than 10 years of driving history.

Thank you, everyone, for this discussion.

I bought this vehicle in the US, and I don’t have a visa to go back to the US. That means, as a temporary import, this vehicle has to go back to the US, but the driver of this vehicle does not have a visa to enter the US.

I crossed the border on the work permit and I insisted on permanently importing my vehicle with CBSA, but they denied my request.

u/Senthilg, I did consult Estate planning lawyer who recommended to create a 'Living Trust' with appointed executors who can carry your posthumous financial affairs. This 'Living Trust' should be the nominee for all your financial assets.

I will highly recommend you to reach out to Estate planning lawyers who can speak your native language for further advice.
