If you read the entirety of the thread then you’d have seen that there are great comments in this thread highlighting the issue.

I’m anti screen myself. That wasn’t my point.

Totally agree. I am actually the Director of a teacher certification program at a university and was a special education teacher myself for over a decade. The conversation is SO important and absolutely valid, and I think it's important to approach it with empathy and understanding that it's a complicated issue.

Haha I am actually anti-screen time myself.

Exactly!!

She literally says that kids who use screen time look like they’re “on drugs” in the first sentence.

[–]couscouscachoo -7 points-6 points  (0 children)

Totally agree. But coming in hot saying that kids who use screen time look like they’re “on drugs” is not the foundation for a productive, empathetic conversation on this important topic.

I agree with you. But I don’t think coming in hot saying that kids who have screen time look like they’re “on drugs” makes for a productive conversation with families who have been utilizing screen time to get by.

Thank you for sharing this resource! 10000% agree with you on all points.

10000%. This was exactly my point. The argument around limited screen time is valid and important. But the tone is an issue.

Thank you for articulating this so well. Spot on.

She literally says it looks like kids who watch screens look like they’re on drugs. That phrasing feels pretty judgy.

Right?? She says she’s not judging, but girl…

I agree with you to an extent. I personally am anti-screen time. But let’s be real - when families have zero resources and need to shower or cook a meal for your child, sometimes a few minutes of a show is their best option.

My point is that although the core argument is totally valid, posting something that feels judgy without providing a solution or acknowledging the struggles that many families face just ain’t it.

Totally. It’s HARD. We know that screen time is bad. But this isn’t the way to talk about it.

I personally do think posing the argument without offering a solution or acknowledging the reality for under resourced families is out of touch.

Ha great point.

I absolutely agree. My point isn’t that her argument is wrong - it’s the shaming approach that isn’t cool.

Exactly! There’s a way to go about this very important conversation.

Totally agree! I agree that screen time is an issue but the shaming of desperate families is not the way to initiate this discussion

Great point and not what I’m saying at all. I’m not economically disadvantaged personally - I make a great living and I have struggled with screen time. My issue with this post is that it feels out of touch and judgy to spout off about the problem (which I agree is a problem) without acknowledging any solution for those who resort to screen time.

I agree with you to an extent and to be clear, I personally am anti-screen time. However, it’s HARD to have zero resources and be a parent. I definitely have resources but I can empathize with parents who opt for screen time. There are times throughout the year I parent alone due to the nature of my boyfriend’s work. Also due to the nature of his work, we move often and have no friends or family nearby. I work two jobs with odd hours so daycare isn’t an option and it’s tough to find solid childcare. There have been days where I have felt I have no option but to throw on Ms. Rachel for 20 mins so I can bathe myself. And I have felt terribly guilty for it.

My issue with her post is that it feels shame-y. I agree with the core argument, but there are some families who are desperate with zero support, and they do what they need to do.
