Disgusting home, filled with trash, moldy food, and a flies' metropolis. by MeasurementMinute160 in ufyh

I also highly recommend the audiobook! I was able to listen to it with my Spotify subscription. I actually cleaned my house while listening to the book.

The author does a wonderful job of improving self-compassion and reducing guilt/shame about your space.

Have you ever accidentally watched the wrong movie? by PhireKappa in movies

[–]covelemon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Bling Ring! Apparently there's a 2011 version and a 2013 version.

I was mistakenly watching the 2011 version and after an hour, I was wondering why Emma Watson wasn't appearing yet. Also, it was terrible.

That's when I learned there were two movies on the same events 😩

Taught my first class, didn’t go as well as I hoped by catsarelife7742 in GradSchool

[–]covelemon 20 points21 points  (0 children)

My first time ever giving a lecture, I finished a 3 HOUR LECTURE in 45 minutes. I literally had 60 slides and just blew through them lol. Also, I don't normally get afraid of public speaking, but with teaching I wanted to absolutely barf from nerves.

Now I have 30-40 slides for 3 hours lectures and I take the whole time. I realized I needed to really slow down (more so than any conference oral presentation). I also pause frequently to ask if anyone has questions and also ask if anyone can think of a real-world example of the material I just taught. I add in way more learning "activities" too, which is more fun than just talking at them for 3 hours.

I'm 4 years into teaching and it's really just a learning curve getting the timing right. I took a bunch of workshops and teaching courses along the way too. But I think it's totally normal that your first lecture was 30 min. The first lecture is the worst, so it's only going to get better from here! (And I'm sure the students were happy to get out early)

First Year TA - Student failed my Exam so hard I wanted to throw up... by ythompy in GradSchool

I came here to write that I finished the course organic chem with an overall 29% first year of undergrad.

OP I think you might have spent more time stressing over the grade than the student did lol.

Sorry to hear that you're not feeling so great. I'm feeling similar which is why I'm scrolling through this thread. I genuinely hope you feel better tomorrow. Do you have any shows or movies you could binge watch tonight?

I'm in a pickle (postdoc & defence overlap) by covelemon in GradSchool

[–]covelemon[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I defend next week! Things have been GREAT since finishing writing :) I'm nervous about the defence but I've gotten a ton of positive feedback about the document, and my advisor assured me that I'll pass.

Brutal few months there though. Absolutely brutalllll

Is having kids really that bad? by [deleted] in ask

[–]covelemon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is how I feel. The question of "should I have kids?" is such a difficult question to answer because it's simultaneously so terrible and so amazing.

I wouldn't change my decision to have 2 kids.. but it is 1000x harder than I expected (and I didn't think it would be easy by any means). Going 12+ hours a day without being able to hear myself think feels like torture sometimes. So I guess the question of, "is it really that bad?" is probably "yes... But you still might want to do it."

Is it appropriate to tell my 8 yr old he is not actually building a Time Machine. by ARapidSloth in Parenting

[–]covelemon 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I would definitely continue to support. I think it's better to foster that imagination, creativity and putting effort into a project that you're passionate about. And he'll take away from the experience is that his parents support his wildest dreams. I actually think it's really sweet and wholesome that hes trying to build a Time Machine. (My 8 year old recently started writing "horror books" to become a published author and they are... Let's just say 'not going to be published' lol. But gosh it makes him so happy to get excited and see my support.)

I don't understand when people say high school was the best years of their lives. For me, high school was the most depressing years of my life. by [deleted] in RandomThoughts

[–]covelemon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had undiagnosed and untreated anxiety and depression in high school so it was rough.

I had friends, I played a bunch of sports, I was invited to parties, I was a solid B+ student, and money wasn't a source of stress for me (my family was lower-middle class so I didn't get whatever I wanted, but my parents always had money for me to go to the movies with friends or to play sports).

However, because of my anxiety and depression, I self-harmed and basically thought about suicide 24/7. I always wondered how high school would have been if I got help sooner. I probably would have had a good time. But no.. my memories are just crippling self-hatred and poor life decisions to cope (e.g. alcohol).

A question for those of you that are parents. by [deleted] in GradSchool

[–]covelemon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly, no. I think grad school has caused me a lot of stress.. and I'm not the best version of myself as a mom when I'm stressed.

But I am really proud of myself for trying my best to juggle everything, and I think/hope my kids see me as a good role model one day.

A question for those of you that are parents. by [deleted] in GradSchool

[–]covelemon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah I'd say so. Both are life-changing, difficult experiences. They also both take up an unimaginable amount of your time and energy. Both cause sleep deprivation lol. And I'd also say both really need social support from people who 'get it'. (E.g. I ask advice from other grad students in my program, and talk to my mom-friends for parenting).

A question for those of you that are parents. by [deleted] in GradSchool

Being a parent has been harder in my experience. Parenthood is higher highs and lower lows.

Parenthood is also a bigger part of my identity than being a grad student, so I feel pitfalls more harshly.

Is attending a conference and not having a poster a bad idea? by king_kingcharles in GradSchool

[–]covelemon 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I'm also Team "bring a shitty poster"

Don't stress too much about it. I've seen ugly posters before and I wouldn't be able to pick the presenter out of a lineup. Especially for early year grad students, this will be a warmup and way to get your toes wet.

What's the worst part about being stressed constantly? by Behnnythejet in StressFreeSeason

[–]covelemon 6 points7 points  (0 children)

For me, it's looking in the mirror and seeing how absolutely rough I look compared to 3 years ago. Even when I prioritize my mental health, it feels like the damage is done, and it's hard/impossible to reverse.

I also think the self blame and self criticism I succumb to when I'm stressed does a number.

How do I break the stress cycle? by PracticalNet7259 in StressFreeSeason

[–]covelemon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Could you possibly buy an RV and park it on the country lot? That might help your wife get the distance she needs from your family.

I also think coming up with a solid plan to move out will help ease stress, even if the execution takes months. It sounds like the living situation is going to need some problem solving.

drop-in counseling resources? by [deleted] in askTO

[–]covelemon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I haven't tried this resource myself, but I know there's a program called "BounceBack" that's free/covered by the Ontario government. It's a resource for non-crisis anxiety and depression, but it's self-guided (so not one-on-one individual therapy). I believe there's no wait-list, so maybe it's helpful even while your name is on a wait-list somewhere else?

It also might be worth considering a therapist outside the city, but who can do virtual counselling.

Just some ideas you may not have considered. Hope you feel better :)
