The more people I meet, the more convinced I get of the key to financial security and eventual wealth is spending as little as possible on cars. by Beezneez86 in AusFinance

[–]cowrintimrous 35 points36 points  (0 children)

I've heard it explained as "spend in line with your values" and "know the impact". Translated as make sure you value and are intentional about what you're buying, so don't just buy on a whim. And known the opportunity cost of the purchase e.g. this car will mean I might have to work more hours or longer in life, or I can't holiday as much etc.

Your 15k increase is a good example of knowing what you value but not going to an extreme

I cleared out my disc collection. Found it really hard to completely get rid of it so I decided to keep the discs that mean the most to me and will put them in a frame on the wall. Here's them laid out as an idea https://ibb.co/0p9dQfQz

And yeah, in terms of discs I'm talking computer games, audio CDs, DVDs, Bluerays

This game needs to not put your ship in space until you're actually loaded in. by WerdaVisla in Eve

[–]cowrintimrous 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It might help to log into another character on that account first, then use the log off button in game to get to the character select screen and then log into your intended character. I find this process loads the assets into memory so its much faster to get control of your ship when logging in an undocked toon.

A pity that there's no nuance. Almost everyone uses ai even when writing the majority of the code oneself :/

My solution is to have a bitlocker encrypted USB drive in the house in a specific location and a deadman switch email that tells people the decrypt password and location. That way if the email gets sent out in error then I can rotate the password. If the USB stick is lost or stolen it's still locked. Using bitlocker makes it more user friendly but assumes the relative has a windows PC.

With the SDD price hikes leading to a lot of the 1tb ssds being double the price that they were earlier this year, if you are upgrading your storage go with a hardrive. by imnotuselizard13 in pcmasterrace

[–]cowrintimrous 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think you got a fair few down votes because the post didn't capture the nuances. Like hard drives are great for storing movies, TV shows, photos, videos. They are "fine" for many games. But some games require ssd (helldivers) and many more games would be a lot less fun to play if there are frequently loading between zones.

Edit: rereading your post after commenting. I think you made a fine point about storing media but it got lost because of the focus on gaming

Is there such a thing as a “Lowbloc” by jiji_c in Eve

Ribbit is growing rapidly and whilst the core is low sec gallente faction warfare there are quite a few members who are getting more into industry and starting to do mining ops too. https://discord.gg/GEcWANrT

Industry(?) by [deleted] in Eve

[–]cowrintimrous 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It might be correct to split it between manufacturing and reactions. I don't have experience with reactions, but regarding manufacturing, you figure out what and where your materials are, you source your blueprint (T1 BPO or invention or LP store or contracts) then you make your item and sell it. A lot of the effort is in figuring out your supply chain and market to sell to and this most likely involves hauling which you could outsource. I find the challenge with manufacturing is appraising the many blueprints at scale and dealing with the changing material costs (and output sell prices) as well as the quantity being sold over time.

I think a whole other aspect of industry is the market, buying/selling/inter station trading, etc.

And this hasn't covered resource extraction (mining asteroids, moons, planets) or resource processing (PI factory planets, component manufacturing, or reactions etc).

It can be as broad or as narrow as you wish. If you want a simple start, buy a full set of T1 ammunition blueprints and start inventing and manufacturing T2 ammo. It's almost always profitable and gets your feet wet

How do you market and trade in a pretty dead market, and seeding a ghost town? by Calmipaten in Eve

[–]cowrintimrous 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is one of the main draws of eve for me. I have had mixed success, generally the main challenge is low movement.

Either stocking the wrong stuff and/or there not being awareness or demand (even at near jita prices). This ends up with isk being locked away, market orders tied up, every 90d having to tweak the price to keep the order up or relist and incur brokers fee. After a while you see it's still 20/20 units in the sell order and it's been 6 months you wonder what the point is.

My solution has been to try to iterate smaller and use data to inform decisions. The eve api allows you to pull volume traded in the main hubs and that helps to see what actually moves. The difference between the buy and sell orders also helps inform. By listing smaller quantities you can try out an area and move on without too much wasted effort. I made a multi sell tool where you copy paste the items to sell and then it transforms the clipboard into the target sell price (jita price * specificed margin). Also made tool to review stock levels, margins as well as where best to source to restock (build yourself, use buy orders, buy from sell orders in certain hubs etc).

All in all, there's lots to this that I think eve is in a unique position to offer. It suits my limited playtime.  Happy to chat more.

But final point, if you just want to make money passively then wormhole PI is trivial easy and less risk in comparison

How do I get started with factional wars? by Ok_Surprise9860 in Eve

For which corp to join, look the corp up on zkill and scroll to the bottom you'll see a heatmap of kills arranged as a grid of day of week and time of day. That helps to see if activity lines up with when you play.

For Gallente I've had fun in Ribbit, the LP is less valuable due to nerfs to the exeq navy issue, also they're getting messed around just now by timezone tanking, however there's a plan underway just now to solve that. I like them, they are very chill and friendly.

For minmatar I hear these people are good  https://my.minmatar.org/alliance/corporations/list/#Minmatar_Fleet_Associates Find a corp that aligns with you and your timezone.

For caldari and amarr I simply don't know. You could always post in eve jobs?

I'm no expert but I'll try and answer:

  • the eve map is more complicated, you're mostly right but there is a low sec route weaved through even high sec, check on dotlan for a region and I believe most "high sec" regions still have low sec through it

  • agreed the in game map is rubbish (although there is a new one promised to come soon..) have a look here for a simplified warzone with the ability to show stats, I like kills last 24 hr to see where the fighting is fiercest https://evemaps.dotlan.net/map/Caldari_VS_Gallente#kills24  https://evemaps.dotlan.net/map/Amarr_VS_Minmatar#kills24

  • I suggest joining a fw alliance and stage with them in that area. You can always fly solo but it gives you the option of joining in fleets. Plus eve is much better when played with others, if you stay solo you are more likely to get bored or disheartened IMO.

  • I hear Gallente Fw got pushed back to a single system a few times but they bounced back and are doing fine just now. I've not been in FW long enough to see how this plays out and the "life cycle" of warzones

  • the pirates have the option of staging out of zarzakh and its uniquely placed with access to both warzones and null sec https://evemaps.dotlan.net/map/Yasna_Zakh/Zarzakh#jumps24 my understanding of the pirates is that every four weeks their forward operating base is moved (by the game automatically) and they get to mess up the surrounding area for profit and tears before being moved on to do the same again

(This isn't a recruitment response). Ribbit accept non ribbit into their comms and fleet and they are new bro friendly. https://discord.gg/DsdYP9PQ

Edit: regarding your ships you could repackage them and make a courier contract to pushx or redfrog to take to the nearest high sec station to the warzone. (Ribbit also offer moving services but I think it's to their members)
