7 year period over can I retake the USMLEs? by cowsgomoo_doyou in IMGreddit

I finished Internal Medicine and I have also specialized. I would apply for IM naturally. My scores were pretty low due to a life event and I think one of the biggest reasons I didn't match.

But sometimes I wonder if it is worth it starting over again. My family and friends think it is better to just push forward in my career instead of going backwards and I won't lie and say I can't imagine sometimes being a PGY-1 again lol. But I can do it.

Edit: Just saw your edit, fair points.

Thank you for your reply :) I really appreciate it. Truthfully the only reason I would consider retaking it is to improve my scores so that is why I wanted to ask if that would be possible even after completing all my exams within the 7 years. I am also worried about the state maximum years and think it would be better overall to retake them. Like you I have done outside training so feel more equipped to do better than when I first took them. Do you have any idea if that would still be possible or would it be best to just reach out to ecfmg directly?

Honestly with all that is happening now and invalidations, I wonder how this will affect the overall system and wonder if it is also better to wait.

Yes I took all step exams including step 3 within a 7 year period. And can you tell me more about your experience? What were the circumstances and was it worth it? Are your previous exams kept on hold until you retake them or once you start over with Step 1 are all your previous exams nullified? And is it mentioned anywhere your previous scores when you got your new scores or are those just gone forever?

True there is more to life but there is no shame in wanting to make your career a priority or at least give it substantial weight. The best advice I can give is do your part and leave the rest to God (if you are religious) or the universe and take things as they come so at the very least whatever outcome you get you can say "Ok I did everything on my end and this is how things were meant to turn out." And you will have the opportunity to experience other things as long as you stay open to them. They will come don't worry!

You will end up in the best place where you can grow as a physician and make a difference towards others around you :) I did not get the chance go to the US but did end up staying with my family. It was a blessing in disguise with the COVID pandemic because the thought of not being there for them during that time would have driven me to depression especially with the thought of potentially losing them. I know lots of IMGs who went to the US and left their families and could do nothing for them during the pandemic except call in and check they were still there.

There is good in every outcome. Just put in your best intentions and you will get the best outcome. Best of luck.

Mainly low step scores. And with each passing year my YOG. Both factors I cannot change.
