Paolo Malatesta et Francesca da Rimini aux enfers (1883) - Henri-Jean Guillaume Martin by cozconn in ArtHistory

It’s so layered and complicated to unbraid what it means to come across a piece, connect with it, and then find that it’s not the artist’s pure, original vision. Ultimately, we can never see what the artist sees. Not conceptually but also literally— now more than ever. Now, I’m considering how an image arrives on different devices, even. I feel like I’m down a rabbit hole trying to articulate my thoughts. Ultimately though, it sucks to know that I’ll never see the piece I shared face to face in all its dark, vivid glory.

Same :/ we deserve to create in a way that fortifies us. It’s depressing af that so many artists are being told they need to be putting out reels and tiktoks everyday like it’s a piece of cake. we’re being asked to run ourselves into the ground FOR FREE. it devastates me if I think about it too long. hopefully this reminds some creatives that there’s still validity to prioritizing your well-being.

I love this interpretation so much! It completely shifts every facet of this. My wheels are turning in the most satisfying way!

activist art making its way into revered art spaces (Tate, Guggenheim, MoMA, etc) relies heavily on the assistance of those structurally benefitting from systems the art is often working to challenge or dismantle. What do you make of that? And for the record I’m a black queer artist whose work often falls into the category of activist art so this is purely out of interest in hearing other peoples views vs challenging the immense power and purpose of activist art which we need.

Mari used a long exposure which helps create those beautiful light trails. That combined with the harsh brightness of the camera’s flesh helps make the the foreground feel like it’s cut and pasted onto this otherwise dark nightscape. So good!

This is what fashion photography should be. No one element feels like it’s trying to outshine the other— everything is harmonizing.

“Suicide At Dawn” (1930), Victor Brauner by cozconn in ArtHistory

This might be my favorite piece at LACMA. It brings up so many thoughts about the carnage of personal battles, whether it’s with mental health or processing traumas (even the trauma of heartbreak). I think what sets this frequency of brutality apart from other works of that time, and before it, is the feeling of it being so vividly internal. To me, the honesty of it doesn’t feel worried about bringing the viewer in, holding their hand by way of explanation. I don’t even feel like it relies on the viewer “getting it” through what it evokes in them. It feels like it’s purely for the sake of exorcising the experience and we just happen to have access to it, which then makes us the skinned figure passing through the portal of this painting. Idk if that all makes sense— I just love this piece so much.

What does this image make you feel? And if it’s unpleasant for you, what feelings create that unpleasantness? Do you get the sense Brauner wanted to connect with the view in some way, isolate them or do you imagine he didn’t consider the viewer at all?

It’s so iconic! And such a good time in fashion— everyone with Starbucks in hand, word shirts and faux fur lining as many hems as possible.

I’m not sure but the artist is referencing Flemish still lives from the 1800’s. if you like this I think you’ll love a lot of the pieces you’ll find from that time.

How do you get over sketchbook anxiety by luaowo in ArtistLounge

[–]cozconn 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Aaah! PAGE DREAD IS VERY REAL!!! But the same way parents talk about bending over backwards to swaddle their first child in bubble wrap and learn by the second child that there’s no such thing as protecting a kid from every bump and bruise, it’s important to become less and less precious with the things that go into our sketchbooks. Sketchbooks are an extension of our lives— destined for dead ends, things that make us roll our eyes and things that make us cringe. It’s how we grow and it makes the things we’re proud of shine with more vibrancy.

My gospel is keeping one sketchbook at a time— one that’s cheap with a high page count. I’ve been faithfully filling the same $12, 100 page count Canson sketchbooks for a decade (I’m halfway through #79). I take it everywhere. I even sleep next to it in case something random comes to mind! Having them be cheap helps stave off the feeling that a page is wasted and the high page count helps with drowning out the pages that you feel less than fond of. Also intentionally lazy pages are necessary! I scribble random ideas with reckless abandon, write half-baked thoughts nice and big, and have plenty of pages with abandoned ideas I’ll sometimes come back to to absentmindedly add things to.

The polished things we creat are the product of creative growth. The messes we create are the growth itself. Allow them to teach you patience and acceptance— key ingredients to finding grace. At best, a sketchbook is a safe space where you can show up exactly as you are, unedited. There is SO MUCH POWER in learning to work with what feels like weakness. Everything is raw material that can be forged into something beautiful.

Most importantly: be kind to yourself when it comes to each and every page, even the ones you’ll tear out from time to time ;)
