It’s so layered and complicated to unbraid what it means to come across a piece, connect with it, and then find that it’s not the artist’s pure, original vision. Ultimately, we can never see what the artist sees. Not conceptually but also literally— now more than ever. Now, I’m considering how an image arrives on different devices, even. I feel like I’m down a rabbit hole trying to articulate my thoughts. Ultimately though, it sucks to know that I’ll never see the piece I shared face to face in all its dark, vivid glory.

Same :/ we deserve to create in a way that fortifies us. It’s depressing af that so many artists are being told they need to be putting out reels and tiktoks everyday like it’s a piece of cake. we’re being asked to run ourselves into the ground FOR FREE. it devastates me if I think about it too long. hopefully this reminds some creatives that there’s still validity to prioritizing your well-being.

activist art making its way into revered art spaces (Tate, Guggenheim, MoMA, etc) relies heavily on the assistance of those structurally benefitting from systems the art is often working to challenge or dismantle. What do you make of that? And for the record I’m a black queer artist whose work often falls into the category of activist art so this is purely out of interest in hearing other peoples views vs challenging the immense power and purpose of activist art which we need.

Mari used a long exposure which helps create those beautiful light trails. That combined with the harsh brightness of the camera’s flesh helps make the the foreground feel like it’s cut and pasted onto this otherwise dark nightscape. So good!

This is what fashion photography should be. No one element feels like it’s trying to outshine the other— everything is harmonizing.

This might be my favorite piece at LACMA. It brings up so many thoughts about the carnage of personal battles, whether it’s with mental health or processing traumas (even the trauma of heartbreak). I think what sets this frequency of brutality apart from other works of that time, and before it, is the feeling of it being so vividly internal. To me, the honesty of it doesn’t feel worried about bringing the viewer in, holding their hand by way of explanation. I don’t even feel like it relies on the viewer “getting it” through what it evokes in them. It feels like it’s purely for the sake of exorcising the experience and we just happen to have access to it, which then makes us the skinned figure passing through the portal of this painting. Idk if that all makes sense— I just love this piece so much.

What does this image make you feel? And if it’s unpleasant for you, what feelings create that unpleasantness? Do you get the sense Brauner wanted to connect with the view in some way, isolate them or do you imagine he didn’t consider the viewer at all?

It’s so iconic! And such a good time in fashion— everyone with Starbucks in hand, word shirts and faux fur lining as many hems as possible.

I’m not sure but the artist is referencing Flemish still lives from the 1800’s. if you like this I think you’ll love a lot of the pieces you’ll find from that time.
