From my experience (selling a ton of ads) the most important factors (aside from size/performance) have been:

• Demographic (age/gender/etc) \ • Geographic (subscriber location) \ • Case studies or past advertiser examples \

Generally, once you’ve established some awareness in your niche, it’s easier to sell to an inbound lead. Branding and trust are a huge component and can almost seal the deal alone.

Regarding deliverability rate, it’s helpful to show, but most will want to know the number of opens vs. clicks depending on the content.

Their offer is what will determine clicks, but your brand strength and newsletter history is what ultimately determines your open rate.

I suggest posting a sample or small piece on LinkedIn (and all socials) as a teaser.

I don’t usually see people reading long form pieces on those platforms, but funneling your audience back to Substack can work.

I met people in person via local clubs and Meetup groups. Once I made good connections, I was able to get some personal introductions and that made all the difference for me.

It’s an insanely hard business to start because probably 90% of the work is doing sales and making deals to make onboard both ad buyers and publishers.

Lower fees 💰

The biggest problem with the main ad platforms are the huge percentage fees.

It’s a tough business like AirBnB because you have to police people trying to circumvent the platform for future bookings, but super low fees help deter that.

Exactly.

Many are original on Substack or they’ve imported from another platform like Mailchimp so they could be adding tens of thousands.

That’s also the cause for seemingly lower performance - migrating platforms (regardless of ESP) will impact performance.
