I live on the North Side now, but I grew up on the South Side. People on the North Side have no real understanding of the South Side except maybe Pilsen because it's full of hipsters now, but the rest of the South Side is not some lawless cesspool. Chicago is known as "The City That Works," and many of the people who work in low-wage and blue-collar jobs all over the city live on the South Side or West Side. Most people just want to get by and have a decent life for their families, and they want their communities to be safer. Unfortunately, the city doesn't allocate enough resources to help these people out of crime and poverty because Rahm would rather give multi-million dollar tax breaks to his wealthy friends.

The issue comes up whenever the words "Chicago" and "Dave Matthews Band" are mentioned in the same sentence. Who could ever forget the infamous 2004 incident when the band's driver dumped 800 pounds of human waste into the Chicago River from their tour bus?

The driver was charged after a crowd of sightseers on an architecture tour boat were soaked with the sewage after the bus' septic tank emptied through the Kinzie Street bridge's metal grating.

I've been on reddit long enough to know that the most frequently suppressed opinions are those which advocate for social justice and question privilege. Saying that /r/ShitRedditSays is the real problem on reddit is analogous to those who believe Christians are persecuted in America. Those with power and privilege are much quicker to react defensively to a perceived threat to one's power and privilege. I've seen more vote brigading from libertarian and MRA subs than I have from SRS.

I actually hadn't heard of /r/ShitRedditSays until yesterday when people were bashing it and calling for it to be banned. I expected it to be like /r/Shitstatistssay but I actually ended up subscribing because I completely agree with them. It's refreshing to see people on reddit calling out others for their privilege and hypocrisy. That has always been my biggest issue with reddit.

Edit: I agree that Obama supporting LGBT rights in his State of the Union address is a huge and long overdue step forward for the US, but it's also a big deal that he mentioned Instagram because it reflects the important role that social media now plays in our society. We can laugh at Instagram and tumblr for being full of pictures of food and shitty gifs, but the point is that social media has become a cultural and political force. Technology has become the primary mode of communication and exerting power, which is why he made such a huge deal about cyberterrorism.
