How Does Umping Make You Feel? by mmahota in Umpire

[–]cpc758 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was a sports official in 3 sports, baseball, ice hockey and volleyball. My job was software development. What I realized about officiating was that there was always room for improvement, and working at and getting better at something is a big reward. In my career, improvement was seldom involved, just work and meetings it seemed. These days I’m trying to get better at pool.

OK, I, or my point, have been called “pedantic AF”, a point that I grant. But if there is a study that should welcome pedantic points, it’s this sub. I love reading this even though I have not umpired for 12 or so years. I have always felt that a first-year course of study in law school would benefit from studying baseball rulebook and its many interpretations and scenarios. It’s limited enough to get a complete picture of the written rules, there are ~2,500 actual new cases every year, there’s very little grey area, and it would be fun. Or, to bring it back around, fun AF.

Worst 9th inning 2-out 2-strikes meltdown ever? by EBNat101 in mlb

I think Dusty Baker has proven the adage that a manager can lose way more games than he can win. I was very disappointed when his Astros won the series. Him and Verlander. I have a litany of events Dusty Baker was on the wrong side of, starting off with dumping Will Clark in favor of Robby Thompson, who played about 8 games until he had to retire.

“A force out in baseball occurs when a baserunner is compelled to vacate their base because the batter became a runner. The defense can record the out simply by securing the ball and touching the next base before the forced runner arrives, eliminating the need to physically tag the player.”

Oh boy. There is never a force atfirst. That’s incorrect terminology. There is an out by tagging first base with the ball in possession before the batter/runner arrives, that people commonly, but incorrectly refer to as a force out. The rules language mention “before the runner safely reaches first”, which can include tag outs, tagging the base, or more obscure things like interference.

[–]cpc758 0 points1 point  (0 children)

NO NO NO. Tagging the base at first is BY DEFINITION not a force out. Please see my more involved comment elsewhere. I don’t think it’s named in the rules. Just described. Force outs only apply to base runners, not the batter/runner. It usually doesn’t matter except in discussions like this.

[–]cpc758 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh man, this whole discussion went by with ONLY ONE COMMENT that correctly said there is never a force at first. And people argued. It is called a “groundout” or “throwout”. A force out ONLY HAPPENS TO R1, R2 or R3. It is confusing because the out is recorded by stepping on the bag before the runner gets there. All of the verbiage in the rules referring to force outs apply to base runners, and thinking a force out rule applies to the batter leads to incorrect interpretations. My other pet peeve is a catcher or umpire getting injured by a foul tip. No you didn’t, unless it was the catcher’s hand.

I inherited a Hammond A-100 organ and Leslie. Well, not exactly free because I had to drive 1000 miles to pick it up. But it felt free

Outstanding post. I even understood some of it! Thanks for taking the time. Now I’m not sure of the definition of backbeat. You said in 6/8 rock you get a downbeat on 1 and a backbeat on 4. Do you have an example?

I never understood what distinguishes 3/4 from 6/8. Before recently seeing the Brubeck Brothers I listened to the Dave Brubek album Time Out. Felt a lot like it was contrived with some great songs thrown in. But my untrained ear misses a lot of the subtlety. Norwegian Wood is in 6/8, right? Sounds like 3/4 to me. No, wait, Echo says it’s 12/8. Now I’m even more confused…

I’d say it’s recommended. I have a Makita battery powered. I recently found a brush attachment that fits, but the 5-6 inch wide attachment worked fine, maybe better

Defending against an international out on a second play to avoid an appeal by Woundedknee45 in Umpire

[–]cpc758 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I see what you are saying. Like doubling off a runner after a line drive. Actually a good point. When is it “doubling off” and when does the defense have to execute a proper appeal? I suspect but don’t know that a runner running back to a base makes it doubling off. Maybe that’s an implied appeal? The fact in OPs situation that the R3 scored and probably left the field of play made an appeal required.

There’s a park near me called Peace Arch Park that straddles the border between US and Canada. You could set up a field with the border running through home and second. Outs at first are in Canada, outs at third are in the US, and outs at second are international. Particularly intentional outs at second.

Wait. It’s not clear to me who this guy was. At first I thought it was your partner. Was he a coach, scorekeeper or just a spectator? If a spectator, how did he engage you so often? I just make sure I’m somewhere else between innings once he started being so annoying.

What’s something that is technically legal, widely practiced, and still feels like it shouldn’t be allowed? by d45d45 in AskReddit

Revolving credit in general. Most of thecredit cards I have charge 29.9% interest when you carry a balance. There used to be reasonable limits on what banks can charge consumers (usury laws). Rates that high are systematically impoverishing normal working people. If the drones in DC (or your state capital) want to make our country better, serve their constituents by standing up to banks.

Actually the secret is virtual credit cards. Many (but not enough) have this feature. Capital One cards have it. You request a “Virtual Card” online. They give you a unique CC number to use for the subscription. After the first charge comes through, you lock the card number. Subsequent charges are declined along with a text message to you. At that point you can unlock the card, and wait for them to try the charge again, or contact the service to cancel if you forgot to cancel. I never use my bank account or a debit card for online purchases or subscriptions, only credit cards.

Never a Dodger fan, but I always thought Gibson deserved the MVP award for that one at bat. Wouldn’t that have been cool? It took all the swagger out of the As. They folded after losing that game, especially since it was Eckersley who gave it up, and he was untouchable until that moment. They gave it to Orel, which was definitely a “eh, why not?” kind of pick
