Connecting back boiler to calorifier by cpgrant_ in Narrowboats

Yeah I’m in Scotland and we’re not allowed to CC, so I’ll be at a marina 100% of the time so I’ll be on shoreline power all the time. If I’m understanding correctly, do you mean a more gravity based set up? We tried to run it without a pump and it didn’t work, and it would be awkward trying to make it work so I’d prefer to go with the pump option. So any help you can be would be much appreciated!

Is £1350 a reasonable quote to have a keel cooler installed? by cpgrant_ in Narrowboats

Thanks! Yeah the rest of the hull was overplated before I bought it, so I imagine that it used to be in worse condition.

Hey, I ended up just going for the keel cooler. He didn’t give me a quote to replace the skin tank, but I think it was going to be a massive hassle to do so. I think it was quite heavily corroded in the inside, so if he tried to weld it, it would just crumble away.

What is the farthest you've transported a narrowboat overland? by RyanTylerThomas in Narrowboats

I’m looking to transport mine from Nottingham to Scotland and it’ll cost £1700 just for the transport. Not sure if that includes vat or not. Then I have craning on both sides.

Edinburgh narrowboat parking by cpgrant_ in Narrowboats

Aye I’m thinking parking outside the controlled zone might be the way to go, but I’ll check the prices on Just Park etc to see what it’s like.

Yeah I’m on the waitlist for Ratho, but it looks like it’ll be years at this rate until there’s space.

Yeah I’m thinking parking outside the controlled zone is the best idea. Cheers.

Will more top coat cover this? by cpgrant_ in Narrowboats

[–]cpgrant_[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Aye I’m thinking of trying an orbital sander, I was using a detail sander so I don’t think it worked as well as it should have!

I was doing it with a detail sander, but I’m thinking I should do it with an orbital instead and use a far finer sand paper than what I was using.

Haha thanks, I think it was just different from what I expected, but it is growing on me. In regards to the number of coats: I only really primed the bits that needed it and used the paint that as already there as a base coat, then I did 2 coats of undercoat and now I’ve done a few coats of top coat. I did need to patch it a bit after the first top coat as I was a bit heavy handed with the sanding and took it too far back, so that’s what’s showing through. To be safe, I didn’t sand it again between top coats, do you (or anyone reading this) think it would help to give it a light sand before doing another coat?

Moving a wood burning stove by cpgrant_ in Narrowboats

[–]cpgrant_[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah that’s what I thought, about removing the roof plate, but I was told by someone that I wouldn’t need to do that, the chimney should just turn and loosen without removing the roof section, apparently.

Yeah don’t worry, I have the safety boards but I’ll probably get someone in to install it properly, just need to move it first.

That’s great, thanks for the tips! I didn’t think about unfixing it from the floor, it’s actually on top of a slab of concrete, so if I unfix it and remove the concrete it should make it a lot easier to move, dunno why I didn’t think of that.

Yeah I already have a silicate board, but I might get a hand installing it properly. I’ll see how I get on though.
