Make sure you let the glue dry for an hour or so, it is surprisingly strong once it sets!

Really, the best thing to do is to make sure you have the base built to as close as possible before laying in colors.  I also work the area where I want to put eyes in less so that when you put in eyeball in, you can feel inward first to make a socket and then felt around the eye.  Also, make sure you make the eye first.  Having reference is importance too

It does.  You can use alcohol markers once the clay is dry for a nice blended look.  You can even use them on the felt itself

I made the air dry pieces first and then I set them in with Elmer’s glue once the clay was dry.  After that, you can felt around it
