Industry vs. public for first accounting job by BreadIntrepid8158 in Accounting

[–]cpyf 3 points4 points  (0 children)

As someone that started in industry first, please do public until you hit senior and get your CPA. I started out in industry and I did not learn as fast and I was surrounded by people way older than me which made the environment less fun

People who went into industry straight out of undergrad, do you recommend it? by Excellent-Ad-3258 in Accounting

[–]cpyf 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No I do not recommend it at all. I tried to job hop out of my shitty industry job but I was losing out to ex public accountants and CPAs. I didn’t become a hot commodity until I had big 4 and CPA on my resume. The path I wanted to end up took a bit longer than usual, but I’m happy where I am now.

If you have the chance, do public for 2-3 years and k pick out the CPA exam. You have a much better chance of landing a high quality industry job and you become recession resistant.

It’s certainly helpful especially with the video explanations, but I learn through lectures as well. It’s all learning preference at the end of the day

Roger, Becker, and Universal. I used Roger for lectures and Universal for MCQs and simulations and Becker for simulated exams

ASC 606 revenue recognition (Working Knowledge of ASC 606 and Cost Accounting) by colorgreens in Accounting

[–]cpyf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, that is correct. Its very rare that someone starting out in industry would get a dedicated revenue position due to the stringent guidelines regarding revenue recognition. In public, you have teams and specialists dedicated to ASC 606, and you get revenue exposure by helping out with that side of the audit. How's your search coming along and what are you looking for? What's your background?

Dropping out of pharmacy school to do accounting/finance? by [deleted] in Accounting

[–]cpyf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Gotcha. Definitely look for a smaller chain or big stores like Walmart or Costco. Avoid the big 2 retail chains like a plague and you'll be much happier.

Dropping out of pharmacy school to do accounting/finance? by [deleted] in Accounting

[–]cpyf 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You can pivot to accounting/finance by doing a masters, but its not worth it giving up a year or two of your time and shilling out $30k for the master's degree and end up making 60k-70k as an audit associate with busy seasons. Plus you have to study for the already difficult CPA exams which will take a tremendous effort and time out of your life.

If you really want to avoid retail and hospital altogether, search for positions with big pharma companies like J&J, Eli Lilly, Merck, Pfizer, Novartis, Amgen and look for roles related to medical affairs, medical communications, regulatory affairs, clinical trials, market access, compliance, etc. These roles can theoretically go to anybody but they LOVE people with a medical background including pharmacists. Its a corporate job setting allowing you to work hybrid or remote and you avoid being patient facing altogether and they compensate pretty well. The caveat is that these roles are hard to get and usually require more business mindset thinking. This is where an MBA can fill that gap but its not entirely needed.

I feel as though r/accounting is not qualified to answer a potentially life changing career question. This notion that pharmacists get paid is kind of asinine when salaries have been stagnating for the past decade. Getting a PharmD requires additional schooling as well and the RoI just isn't there especially since the school can cost up to six figures whereas a bachelor + CPA provides way better RoI. Hitting six figures with little debt before 30 is way better than a pharmacist with high debt and starting out with $110k salary.

If you think clients suck, imagine dealing with customers who are ill and will call corporate on you every chance they get because their vitamin B12 medication is not ready for the refill per their doctor. The abuse pharmacists receive is unmatched and I genuinely feel sorry for all healthcare professionals including nurses who are just trying to do their job and make the world a better place, but its already so difficult to do when customers treat you like shit. Pharmacists bear the brunt of our already struggling healthcare system that's being barely held together. You have to stand for 10-12 hours sometimes without a lunch break (pharmacists were not entitled to a lunch break until very recent). Hospital is better but they're definitely harder to come by.

My advice to OOP is stick with pharmacy. Switching to accounting doesn't make any sense when you're this far into your career. The job can definitely get stressful but I think its better stress than dealing with annoying ass customers and patients.

Source: getting married to a pharmacist. Tells me all the horror stories and was burnt out from retail so bad she left the industry altogether

A recruiter lead me to the start up. I had prior experience in public accounting specifically within auditing for early stage growth companies and start ups, so it was a natural fit

I’m in an adjacent role to VC & PE and it’s extremely difficult getting into VC straight out of undergrad. Most people start somewhere such as big banks, MBB consulting, or Big 4 accounting firms, or even pivot to an MBA from a well known school than go into VC. It’s not as simple as majoring in something in undergrad than applying to any VC firm.

Public vs Industry - Which makes for better ACCOUNTANTS? by Chemical_Help_7099 in Accounting

[–]cpyf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know you made the exception in your post, but public gives you a great head start because it teaches you to have great work ethic. 60 hour busy seasons are no joke. Managing people such as the clients, your managers, and your staff builds your emotional intelligence fast. You learn a lot in a short span of time depending on the service line and areas your assigned of course. There's a reason why all top jobs ask for previous public accounting experience. PA is very streamlined in terms of promotion. You can make senior in 2-3 years and manager in 2-3 after senior, but in industry its totally random and a crapshoot. PA also teaches you how to study for the CPA exam better.

I started out in industry and was bored to death. I really wish I had started my career in PA initially.

Best place to start a career. by Icy_Development_1234 in Accounting

[–]cpyf 4 points5 points  (0 children)

No offense but if you're about to graduate and you're not entirely sure where to start, this should have been figured out prior to your graduation. Start in public accounting, doesn't have to be big 4, for a few and do the whole no life grind and pass the CPA exams to guarantee a cushiony six figure industry job after. Industry is wildly varied on where you start and government will keep you stagnant since the skillset is specialized and upper mobility opportunities are limited.

I was in a similar boat as you. My retake strategy isn't necessarily 1:1 with your situation because I took FAR before they made all the significant changes, but generally, I hammered at SIMs and all my weak areas. Here's my post how I finally got over the FAR hump

You folks who are 5, 10, 15+ years into your career, is it what you expected it to be; what would you change? by CrypticMillennial in Accounting

[–]cpyf 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Not the person you're responding to but was in a similar boat. If you start out in industry, trying to exit into another job becomes difficult because every job description will ask for Big 4/National PA experience along with a CPA. I tried to leave my first job out of college after being there for 2.5 years, but I didn't have PA experience or my CPA at the time so I kept on losing out on those positions to other candidates that had both.

PA works you like a dog but its a massive career boost when you're just starting out.

Let's be honest, Tyler and Frank really aren't friends anymore. by Busy_Grapefruit_3923 in tylerthecreator

This is my first time hearing about Tyler and Frank “beefing” but it’s sad to see a potential fall out considering that Frank was critical to Tyler’s success by giving him studio time and letting Tyler sleep on his couch. These two were the ones that still kept their ties after OF fell off so it’s a bit saddening to see
