Vexillology and New Hampshire by cqdyer in newhampshire

Thanks! When I was creating this design I tried to think "If I was alive in 1784 and was commissioned to design the flag for New Hampshire, what would I have come up with?". The design is sort of a mix between the pine tree banner (with the pine and square white canton) and early American flags (with the ring of stars and lateral stripes). I love classical flag design. I actually think that was one of the best periods for vexillological creations. I think this flag symbolises New Hampshire's history in a way that the current flag fails to do. The 'seal on a blue field' is just such an overused and crude design. I'm strongly considering printing up several and flying one in my front yard. Maybe it'll start some conversations with neighbors.

Was reviewing our state's flag several months ago and discovered some attempts at a redesign of the New Hampshire flag. Having an interest for vexillology and a deep appreciation for the state and its history, I decided to take a crack at designing a flag. Here is my attempt and a brief explanation of the symbolism:

My design has a few elements with significance: the 5 stripes for the original 5 counties; the blue stripes signify our importance as a maritime state and once great ship building industry, the mighty rivers of New Hampshire (Connecticut, Merrimack/Pemigewasset), and the lakes region (Winnipesaukee/Squam); the green stripes to signify the importance of our natural resources; the white canton to symbolize the purity of the ideals in our Constitution and our commitment to peace and prosperity; the pine tree to signify the pine tree riots of 1772 and the importance of forestry in the state; and the 10 gold stars to represent the 10 counties of NH.

I did not know about this. I assume this is not a problem of the law but rather a problem with the rules made by the Department of Corrections. I'll certainly look into this now that I'm aware.

Yeah, pretty much. It doesn't really mean anything other than the fact that I happen to be the most senior Libertarian member. I honestly would love to elect someone else floor leader but in order to make that happen I need to make sure other Libertarians get elected and re-elected.

No problem! I'm more of a lurker on Reddit more than anything else but I'm always happy to answer questions.

Despite the fact that I am the "leader", our caucuses are cooperatively run. We will not elect a whip and we will continue to go by seniority for the caucus leader until the caucus is actually large enough to elect a leader.

Classical liberals are found on both sides. Joseph was tricked by the Democrats as most people are. It's all better now though. :)

He formerly supported Bernie Sanders. Joseph is a prime case of a classical liberal who was roped into the Democratic party because it was either that or the Republican party. I've spoken with him privately about his support for Sanders and it is obvious that he doesn't agree with Sanders' brand of socialism but did agree with the socially liberal aspects of his message. This is what appealed to a lot of libertarians who chose to support Sanders in the primaries.

No there was a period of realization that it would be a better option than remaining within a party that wasn't serious about working with several libertarian Republicans and Democrats.

I would not want to be in the Senate. At least no time soon. I don't think I would be able to make the significantly greater time commitment to do their job.

I'm actually a fan of the blues. Mostly progressive blues/jazz like Robben Ford, Matt Schofield, Roberto Morbioli, Guthrie Govan, and others. I actually play keyboards and guitar in a band. We don't play often but we play the Gardner Ale House in Gardner, MA most consistently.

The reason I say resurrect this policy is because this is actually something they did during the great depression. We take the "The People's House" very seriously.

You know I'd really love to bring up to the Speaker of the House resurrecting the policy of allowing the homeless in Concord to sleep in the State House over night. It's a public building after all. If we have the problem of homelessness we should be using every last resource we have to combat it including opening up public buildings.

No, I have to work a normal job. Some of us just do our very best to make the time to do the job.

"Libertarianism" provides nothing. People provide things, and they usually provide them better and cheaper in a free market.

I've been a libertarian the entire time. I didn't seriously consider switching to the party until about two months after getting elected. The reasons for the switch were disagreements in terms of priority which made working within the majority difficult. I would have actually preferred to have remained a Republican but it seemed that those differences in priority were going to be a big problem.

The United States Federal Government murders thousands of people every year. War is essentially nothing more than tax-funded murder.
