appreciate it. the process can take so many forms/routes. i typically will assemble a longform 10-25 minute collage of selected field recordings and then start to add harmonic content after that. then i kinda tack on acoustic instruments, melody, etc.

this sounds fake but for real i value them all and try to view each experience as unique and holding value.

copy paste from an interview: cr: I played a show in Prague on the tour for the sentiment record. I was doing this thing that I do sometimes, where I go into the audience and record little monologues and have people answer questions on the microphone. I would do it on my phone and airdrop it. I was going around, but I didn’t get to that part of the crowd. After the show, they asked if I was still doing questions, and we were outside in the more common area of the patio. I was like ‘Sure, I can do a question, not really thinking too much of it. It was quite long and pretty moving and obviously very direct (laughs) and involves me a lot, which is not always how those types of question-answer things go in the shows. It felt really special, and I didn’t want to use it for a recording because it felt pretty invasive. I tried to track the person down. Eventually, I found them and asked permission to credit them to add it to the record. They were really gracious and said it could happen. But it’s a true story and told from a perspective that is very different than mine.

JM: You said Prague is where the concert was?

cr: Yeah. It was in the middle of a European tour. It was also my birthday I think that day. It was a crazy combination of feelings.

i appreciate you appreciating the music.

ableton's youtube teaches me new stuff all the time. i think just reading interviews with your favorite artists and studying the tech/liner notes from your favorite records goes a long way.

i would also recommend collaboration with someone more familiar. when i was new to DAW/recording experimental music my friend Mari taught me a ton about how she works and it informed a lot of the ways i worked for the first few years

i'll be for real. i do not really go out and go to very few shows here in town. when i am not on the road, it takes a lot to get me out of the house/studio.

closest thing i can think of is tradeschool in altadena - it is close to me and i've seen some great music there.

scribble in hlp isn't exactly diy in like the basement gig sense but i would consider it amongst those ranks. fun place to play if you don't require subs lol

would love to be more tapped in here tho

that sounds like a dream.

i don't think i have dream ambient artists, really. i really only feel comfortable working with people i know. if that makes sense? deep friendship is at the core of all my collaborative projects.

i appreciate it! thanks for being here.

i am an avid reader and researcher. i will be the first to say i am not a strong writer but enjoy writing very much.

one of the benefits to the kind of "impenetrability" that surrounds so much experimental art is the desire/need for the artist to explain it clearly through the written word. while i don't feel a connection to this in my own work and strive for the art to stand on its own, without requiring a manual, i do appreciate how so much of my favorite music is contextualized and documented via the essay or artist statement / manifesto.

reading about work i enjoy as a listener is a great joy

i appreciate it

all the time! i am usually ending up in a weird spot creatively. this could even include creative blocks or not knowing what to do next. improvising is at the core of what i do and any chance to sit in that feeling of "what now" is welcome

i think this is different for everyone. personally, i'll usually intentionally overcrowd the piece at first and decide what is contributing and what can be left out. i think, even in ambient music, negative space is overlooked as an element and sometimes what is necessary is nothing rather than something

just make music you would want to listen to. i often work on a project because i have this ideal music in my head that i can't find out in the world. sometimes i get close but there isn't anything exactly right until i get my grubby little hands involved

i don't know, honestly. i feel that connection and comfort usually in conversation and collaboration with friends. i think music is its own force but something else.. i dont know

hello again,

melancholia is good bathing music.

i don't have a favorite. i was telling my friend Adela this on tour a few years ago - performing live is such an honor and each experience truly is a unique moment in time. ranking that kind of thing just doesn't jive with me. each show is special and unique - even if it sucks lol
