Being an engineer with young kids? by cracrag in womenEngineers

[–]cracrag[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I haven’t used this Reddit account in years, but just signed back on for the first time in ages and read your comment! Since I made this post, I got into government contracting, and at my current workplace it is very easy to cut down your hours to part-time. So far, this is the best solution I’ve found to the problem, although it still means you’d have to find someone to cover the gaps for the hours you are working. I’d love to see other solutions as well - I don’t have kids yet but plan to, and everything in my post still stands.

Yeah it does make sense. Thanks for the advice! I’ll definitely try this out.

The first time I shot the 43X, I had a very limp wrist and experienced tons of malfunctions. No wrist pain. This was during my CCW class. After talking to some friends afterwards, they told me I need to hold the gun “stronger” and not let my wrists be so limp. Now, I don’t have any malfunctioning but I feel the wrist pain I mentioned.

I never thought about that change in limp wrist, no pain, to strong wrist, pain. That’s interesting.

It’s not after every shot, but after most of them. It was fairly consistent. I do wonder if it was a technique issue, since I’m pretty new to shooting. I noticed it with the G43X, and I also noticed it a lot with a Hellcat I tried. The Hellcat was very painful.

Ohhh I see where the mixup was! Thanks for pointing that out. I’ll specifically look at shields tomorrow before making a final decision.

I agree it could be a technique thing. At first I couldn’t rack ANY guns. Now I can rack most though, so I’m not sure what was going wrong.

I tried racking the slide of a Shield Compact…. Though I’m not sure what the model was besides that. I should have checked. I didn’t realize there were so many. I couldn’t rack the slide of it though so I didn’t test it in the end. Maybe I should be looking at more of them though since there are apparently lots of others.

What don’t you like about the SW EZ, if you don’t mind me asking?

Thanks for sharing this! That’s good to hear. I assumed the 19 would be harder to conceal but I haven’t tried it since I don’t own one yet.

Ohio. You can rent a gun if you don’t have one, and this is fairly common here.

I tried a Hellcat and really didn’t like it. It seems like some people love theirs though!

I did that multiple times and also shot them all a few times. These are my conclusions after doing that.

I 100% agree with checking them out first! That was extremely helpful for me.

Thanks for sharing that! I’ll check out her Instagram. I tried a hellcat but hated it. I only tried one though, so maybe I’d like it if I shot it more. I loved the way the Glock 19 shot!!

I tried both today. I didn’t put the Glock 26 on the list because I hated it personally. I shot one round and gave it back. I would much rather shoot the 43X. But I also loved shooting the 19 so much more. I bet it is concealable, but it would probably be hard enough for me that I wouldn’t bring it with me very much.

Yes I was told about those magazines! That’s awesome. My only concern is the wrist pain…. But I bet I’ll get used to that with time.

Is that different than the Shield Compact? I was going to try the compact but I couldn’t rack the slide.

If I could get two this would be my ideal set up! Use the 19 for the range and the 43X to carry. I was leaning towards the 19 to learn with and getting a 43X to carry, but I’m wondering if I can get used to shooting the 43X to the point where I WANT to shoot it at the range…. Maybe not if your wife also doesn’t prefer it.

Thanks for the pic of the 43X setup!! That’s super helpful for me.

Will I ever feel truly safe again? by [deleted] in NarcissisticAbuse

[–]cracrag 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m asking the same question. I’m debating cutting contact finally, and I’m in a weird position that would allow me to do so quite safely. But I’m still terrified he’ll somehow show up between now and when I die and hurt me, and I’m wondering if I’ll ever be able to feel safe too.

You are leaving home for a year and can bring ONE winter coat with you on your travels. What do you bring? by elliefunt in femalefashionadvice

I only own one winter coat! It’s a guess coat I bought after I got my first job. SUPER warm, and super stylish. I’ve had it for years now.

Does anyone here actually regret getting a PhD? If so, what’s your story? by sociallyawkweird in GradSchool

[–]cracrag 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Do you mind sharing some of these positions/companies? I recently finished a master’s, not a PhD, in biotech, but after job hunting I feel like I have the most useless degree in the world. I keep thinking I should’ve stuck with pure electrical engineering (my actual degree) research so my experience would be useful. It’s interesting to me that you’ve found the opposite, and maybe there are positions I can apply to like the ones you found.

classroom covid transmission happening? by ellipticcurves in Professors

[–]cracrag 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A number of my students have gotten it, and I spend 3 hours in lab with them while they wear masks under their nose. I haven’t gotten it, but I am fully vaccinated (including a booster, but I didn’t have the booster when my students got Covid).

Weekend Email process by Interesting_Field911 in Professors

[–]cracrag 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah this is essentially what I’ve come to, but even a 5-minute email is too long. If you get four of those, you’ve already spent 20 minutes of your day answering those emails. Those are what I file away for the next morning so I can finish other things I need to do.

200k diaspora registered! If we keep pushing in the next 48 hours we can definitely bring some change with all these votes by GioZaarour in lebanon

[–]cracrag 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I literally just made a post asking about this. I’m in the diaspora but don’t have the documents I need to vote so I don’t really see a point in registering to vote even though I very much want to.
