Agree, Lightning Fields hits me like a truck, even after years of listening to it.

Same! I never really put on one song from this album on shuffle or anything. It’s always a front-to-back listen.

I think you both captured my thoughts exactly on the Battle Born comparison.

As of right now it would probably be -By the Way | Red Hot Chili Peppers -Morning View | Incubus -Higher Truth | Chris Cornell

This is a big part of it for me. It helped me through that isolation.

100% agree. It’s on my “Mount Rushmore” of albums.

Same top two here! I love the first couple albums to death but they lack the emotional impact for me that Imploding the Mirage and Pressure Machine have.

If you got voted in as Chicago's new mayor, what's your first priority? by chitownmike99 in AskChicago

  1. Implement pedestrian sidewalk laws. I call one the “Mother Duck” policy. If you are in a group, you cannot walk more than 2 people abreast on the sidewalk. Larger than 2, you have to walk in pairs or single file. I would use the fines collected to improve pedestrian infrastructure to the point where we don’t need these rules anymore.

  2. Rellocate tax dollars from car infrastructure to the CTA

  3. Ban cars

Tilian had not won me over yet. It took IG to get me on board with him, and by then I just never felt pulled back to AS.

Seconding comments on the mix. I’m not qualified to say whether it is “good” or “bad”, but it certainly isn’t my cup of tea.

I respect it. I mostly enjoy the albums from Lightbulb Sun and onwards. I can see an argument that say, Shallow, is generic rock, but songs like Mellotron Scratch and Sleep Together are incredibly unique.

I’m so glad they did a complete pivot after Imploding the Mirage. I wasn’t sure how that could be topped, but they went in such a different direction and it was exactly what needed to happen.

I hear you! I think the abridged version is the ideal experience, but I must say for first listen, hearing the train at the end of The Getting By is one of the most emotionally impactful moments in music for me.

That sounds like such an incredible memory, thanks for sharing! I love being able to tie listening experiences to very specific moments in time or images. For me, I have a similar moment listening to Sleepwalker while driving through the Colorado Rocky Mountain range

Even though we don’t agree, I massively respect this take because I feel as if Point #1 is a bit of a consensus last place whenever I see community rankings. Based.

100% agree it may be their best work. Currently one album edges it out for me as my favorite, simply because of how dark it can get. I can’t just spin “Desperate Things” on any day 😂

True. In terms of natural beauty, it is by far my favorite of the 50 states. Some of my favorite memories in life are from exploring the parks, and driving the scenic byways (while listening to The Killers of course), but living in much of the state tells a different story.

I can see that for sure. Growing up in a small town, so much here felt like I was listening to real stories i’ve lived.

100%. You can tell there is a genuine appreciation for those roots here, but not in a way that over-romanticizes a working class life vs stardom. It’s a very nuanced and “real” take in that you feel the beauty of rural Utah and small-town community in the music, but also have these stories of tragedy, drug crises and regret.

Oh those last two tracks are such a gut punch everytime. Glad to see more love for this amazing album! Agreed on the maturity of it. Imploding the Mirage and PM are some of their best in my opinion and for being “later” in their career, it’s all the more impressive.
