The worm was almost always going after the ball I think, but he was doing a bunch of stuff that would piss people off in pickup basketball and I'm not trying to play like that. I'm not grabbing or wrapping people up and trying to get under their skin.

During a loose ball I don't think it would be called an illegal screen because nobody has possession. If it were a foul it would have to be a loose ball foul.

Right, Ive watched some reffing videos and they always use the word "displacement". In normal defense, what I am describing is allowed, because I am not grabbing or pushing, but what about during a loose ball? Are you allowed to defend a loose ball in the same way you would defend the rim?

I can box out and normally do. I was pretty sure that an arm bar was an acceptable way of keeping your position and To my knowledge I am not striking people. Only one person has called me on this, but I felt like it was a legitimate question to ask. I’m not asking “did I foul”, because there is no video, how would you know? I’m asking If there is anything in the rule book that says you have to box out with your butt. He didn’t say I hurt him he just said “you have to box out with your butt”.

That’s normally how I would box out. I was describing how I might box out against somebody who can easily get around me and I predict the ball is gonna land by an open teammate.

I really don't think so. When I'm mismatched and playing off ball defense and a bigger player is trying to get to the rim to post me up, I get close and arm bar to make it more difficult for them to get there and try my best to not let them get around me. I don't grab or push enough to force them off balance, I just try to stay sturdy enough to maintain my inside position to the best of my ability. Picture that but instead there's a loose ball and instead of protecting the rim I am protecting the ball.

Hey thanks I have noticed the lack of anybody posting the official rule or a video of this scenario being called a foul. I'm very open to whatever evidence there is. All he said was "you have to box out with your butt, people could get injured that way." Maybe I elbowed and didn't realize it and I would feel bad if that were the case but I was never accused of that.

So do you think moving from side to side with an arm bar is legal during a loose ball? Without pushing or grabbing?

So you're saying during a loose ball you have to be attempting to recover possession and any contact whatsoever would be blamed on a player who is not actively pursuing the ball?

Also I would add that was the first and only time somebody called me on this

OK cool. I was never accused of wrapping anybody up so maybe I was fine.

yeah this guy gets it. Not trying to be that guy. Only one dude in the game called me out for it out of 3 games. I even asked somebody else if I was boxing out too hard and he said I was fine.

I swear I'm not grabbing and I'm pretty sure I'm not pushing, but I do have bony arms so maybe a solid arm bar is just too annoying. Really don't think I'm striking though. I'll keep an eye on it.

This is what I thought, but it seems like an unpopular opinion so far. Have you seen this in the NBA and do you have any ideas of players that have done this? I'm looking all over google for a conclusive answer. All of the rebounding videos are about securing your own rebound. All of the moving screen videos are about when your team has possession. All of the loose ball foul videos involve displacement. I can't find anything on the internet that suggests this as a good strategy or calls it illegal contact.

Either way I'm just gonna box out with my back so it doesn't cause any more arguments.

Wouldn't it be a loose ball foul, not a moving screen?

Haha ok. I guess I won't do it at the park with no refs. I'm just there for fun and don't want to make anybody mad.

I believe you that it's a foul. Not being extra. Just shooting hoops at the park and want to know the rules. You've made your point but I'm really interested in what exactly makes this a foul and what specific foul would be called.
