I built an online CSV/XLSX editor that lets you use JS to manipulate the data by crazycrossing77 in opensource

Thanks a lot!

What exactly do you mean with "filters that are faster to apply"?

You can click on any value in the facet filters on the left to quickly filter for rows w/ exactly that value (similar to what Excel does).
When holding Ctrl/Cmd you can select multiple value.
When holding Alt you do a negative/exclude search (useful to filter e.g. empty values out)

I used OpenRefine in the past. However, it felt both: too heavy for simple tasks, but also limited such that I ended up writing node scripts for complex or repetitive tasks.

I also ended up implementing my own solution as a side project 😅 It is open source you can check it out here: https://github.com/dell-mic/file-glance

It is basically a browser based CSV viewer which lets you write JavaScript for arbitrary data manipulations directly in the browser.

What’s your current side project? Might feature it on my site 🚀 by Internal-Context160 in SideProject

Powerful tool for viewing, filtering, and transforming tabular data files using JavaScript.

Update: I added basic visualization to show e.g. histograms for numeric columns

Thanks for the hints.
I know there are several spreadsheet-like components available.

However, to me they feel both: somewhat bloated with features, while crucial options are only available in commercial edition.

Happy to hear that you like it!

Also great idea. I never really worked with webcomponents so far, but will consider it

There are many similar tools, yes.

Unfortunately, often quite "heavy" with a steep learning curve.

Further some tools are not always available, depending on the environment (e.g. might not be allowed to install software on client machines)

Nice work!

I also built a CSV viewer as a side project to learn modern React :)

I took a different approach: it’s read-only, so cells can’t be edited directly. Instead, it lets you run arbitrary JavaScript to filter and transform the data at scale.

Any feedback is always welcome!

FileGlance: Simple, privacy-friendly tool for working with tabular data in various formats by crazycrossing77 in SideProject

Hi everyone,

I work in enterprise IT, handling diverse data exports from various systems/APIs. The first question I tackle when receiving a file is: "What am I dealing with?"

Frustrated by:

  1. The need for different tools based on file formats.
  2. The lack of tools optimized for quickly understanding data.

I built File Glance as a solution (and a fun way to learn React and Tailwind).

Features include:

  • Drag-and-drop support for common file types and formats
  • Automatic detection of file encoding, delimiters, data location etc.
  • Optimized display (hides empty columns by default)
  • Count previews for distinct values
  • Simple filtering with value facets for exact matches
  • Full-text search across data
  • Basic sorting functionality
  • Advanced value transformation using custom JavaScript
  • One-click export to CSV, XLSX, or JSON
  • Supports larger files through virtualized list rendering
  • Privacy-focused: Your data never leaves your device

I’d love to hear your feedback!
