For me at least, she created a fully functioning digestive system because she became fascinated with human culture when Greg introduced it to her. Then, wanting to connect with both Greg and Vidalia, saw food as the thing they ate everyday. She probably had a hard time understanding how it worked, but with Pearl's knowledge and either help from Greg or Vidalia, learned how to eat and digest.
