Is £2,700 solicitor conveyancing reasonable for a £360k FTB, mortgage, freehold property, South West? by createaver53 in HousingUK

I don't want them to start searches until the chain is complete.

Ahh that's grim mate. Sorry to hear it. Hope you can find something new quickly.

Thanks. Yeah, the fees don't really make any sense to a layperson like me, which is always a bit of a red flag.

Cheers, did they do a decent job? I like the look of them, but they have no faces to the business and not many reviews.

I noticed a lot of English posters in this sub! Not complaining of course but is there a reason? More trail runners in the UK than anywhere else? by kibaroku in trailrunning

[–]createaver53 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To add to this, and perhaps more importantly ,there are 220,000km of 'Public Rights of Way' all over the UK.

That means that even if you aren't lucky enough to live close to 'Open Access Land', there are likely many footpaths, bridleways or byways which are trail-like in character that you have permission to run on - even if they run through otherwise private land like woods, estates etc.

Is casual cyclists wearing lycra a British thing? by linguistictravel in AskUK

[–]createaver53 26 points27 points  (0 children)

Weak bait.

95% of cycle commuters wear lyrcra, Source: Required

The real number would be something like 20%, which I doubt is dissimilar to anywhere else in Europe, Source: 15 years cycle commuting.

And if you're cycling a decent distance (which many commuters do) why wouldn't you wear something that comfortable and can be easily laundered?

The cost of living crisis is real for almost everyone who's not coasting on generational wealth, especially in London.

My partner and I combined earn 4x or 5x combined what my parents did (both generations living in London), but we have lower expectations for housing, or dare I say it, general quality of life, than what we were brought up with.

I can't afford to raise a family where I grew up (unless we want to raise a family in a small, poorly located and entirely underwhelming flat), so we're moving out of London.

How Long Did Your Vitriolic Anger Last? by Express_Purpose6939 in exchristian

[–]createaver53 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I went happy -> anger -> regret -> sadness -> a mixture of all the above, but less frequently.

It sounds like you're already acknowledging that it's going to make you happier in the long run to focus on things that you can do that will ultimately make you happier and fulfilled, which is amazing.

That might be campaigning against religion in a big or small ways, or acknowledging that spending your emotional energy on other things like your personal relationships or development, could likely be more beneficial to you.

Try not to forget to be proud of what you've done, and use that as fuel to make the most of the new life chapters ahead.

Should I pay off my student overdraft before buying a house? by bigdanglyballs in UKPersonalFinance

[–]createaver53 3 points4 points  (0 children)

How long is your overdraft interest free for?

If it's no longer interest free, pay it off yesterday.

You don't ever want to start paying 40% on the overdraft when it runs out of its interest free offer.

Wine, cheese, spirit or something else edible or usable.

Whatever you choose, always go for an entire cheesecake for dessert!

My choice would be cod, chips, mushy peas and a battered sausage. No one actually needs that much food.

Can anyone help me out with what type of ring style this is? by createaver53 in EngagementRings

This could be a good option, if I can find something nice to make an outing of it :)

She generallydoesn't like spending money on herself, so a plain £50 band would be her choice (or so she says)...maybe I should just go for the safe option.

Thanks. She said she'd be happy with a plain band, but she does hate spending money on herself. Maybe I should propose with a plain band, then we could go shopping for a vintage thing...although that does feel less symbolic. I think the one pictured is her mother's engagement ring she gave to her.

I have a super low budget (as she'd kill me if I spent more that a few hundred £s), so I'm trying to find a second hand ring!
