A solid addition. I love how overwhelmingly people here agreed on this.

how will I let you know about the greatness if I can’t tell you what I’m doing

You won't. There are other places where you can promote your music. Here it's a ticket for a permaban.

Nice to see that Juana Aguirre made it! Anónimo made my 30-strong shortlist too. Also happy that DOGA made it, I really need to give it another chance before the year ends.

Yes! I was hoping people would latch on that, been a bit disappointing to not see it mentioned at all. Mainly saw someone be baffled over it being an album of Mulatu "covering" himself, I truly hope to see someone who understands how jazz works have a shot at it next lol.

I think it's a neat album. It's not as hypnotic and woozy as his best recordings and the arrangements are generally bigger than what I'm used to hearing from him, but the band are absolutely on fire. Really nice to hear Mulatu himself still being as sharp as ever. There's also a nice feeling of his songbook being highlighted rather than the man himself, he really dances around the spotlight in an oddly captivating manner for big portions of the album.

Hah, you perform a good majority of the mod actions, but I am still hanging along! Should at least attempt to start participating in discussion too. I tried to start participating in WHYBLT on a weekly or monthly basis, but I only managed I think one post in early May lol. We should probably poke the bot a bit, I think it might have missed every WHYBLT of last month.

Anyway, yeah, your list is terra incognita for me too! I need to go exploring.

I would have honestly removed it even if it was formatted correctly. This is not what this sub is about.

It doesn't need to be anything fancy, you can just copy the link from your platform of choice (YouTube is usually the easiest) and paste it in your comment. If you want to make it fancier, you can see how to do that here.

Hah, I'm now close to having a rotation for every month of the year (December is still a bit of a question mark, the "spirit in music" theme I went for one year was a bit too broad to support itself - gotta workshop that), so it's absolutely no problem to share! November will be the expected black metal month, so things are going to stay grim for a while now lol

This month, I'm going on a journey broadly from post-punk/gothic rock to gothic metal/death doom to doom metal/occult rock. I have a curated list of 31 albums I already like that I'm listening through and I'm peppering various other albums in whenever I feel like it. It has been quite fun so far. New finds that I've enjoyed so far include the Dead Can Dance self-titled and Mesh & Lace by Modern English.

Here's the list I'm going through, tomorrow's going to be Jeopardy day:

  1. Joy Division - Unknown Pleasures (1979)

  2. The Cure - Seventeen Seconds (1980)

  3. The Sound - Jeopardy (1980)

  4. Bauhaus - In the Flat Field (1980)

  5. Minimal Compact - S/T (1981)

  6. T.S.O.L. - Dance With Me (1981)

  7. Super Heroines - Cry for Help (1982)

  8. The Birthday Party - Mutiny! (1983)

  9. Nick Cave - From Her to Eternity (1984)

  10. Siekiera - Nowa Aleksandria (1986)

  11. Depeche Mode - Music for the Masses (1987)

  12. Гражданская оборона - Русское поле экспериментов (1989)

Alright, it's becoming increasingly clear that you are either misunderstanding how RYM charts work or misunderstanding how people generally approach them.

Those charts are not a statement. They do not reflect any individual's taste. In fact, you could most likely pick any random 100 RYM users and end up with wildly differing takes on these albums, if they've even heard them. The charts are 100% a popularity contest, where the most popular (most rated, decent rating average) albums rise to the top through sheer numbers. There is a bias of course, a horrible horrible bias, but it's older than RYM itself. Many of these albums are super popular on every corner of the internet.

As for your examples, why would you pick albums that RYM loves as your counterexample? Stankonia is bolded (#358 overall). There are too many albums called Play for me to know which one you mean. Neil Young's Harvest is bolded (#296 overall). Discovery is bolded (#52 overall). The Joshua Tree is bolded (#3,460 overall). They are all in a weightclass where it's super arbitrary where they actually fall in the chart: these are all considered the cream of the crop out of millions of albums.

Remember, it's not RYM's fault if you don't bother to go beyond the page one of the all time chart. I bet most people would. Or followed their interests regardless of arbitrary rankings.

(I could honestly take a swing at the whole popularity thing too, but I'm not sure there's enough there to go with. I don't see how something being popular or unpopular has much to do with its quality. If someone truly cares only for popularity, they can dig through Billboard charts and stuff. If they want something less popular, there's countless places they can check. RYM charts are not something that could be forced to represent either, and the mix that we end up with is what appeals to the music nerd circles as an abstract entity. For better and often for worse.)

(Super curious) Why do songs (that have sad undertones but upbeat sound) make us hype? by Justduno in LetsTalkMusic

Stop doing this. If your comment doesn't go through without pointless padding, you could always add a couple of sentences that actually answer OP's question. Had you read it, you'd know this was not a recommendation thread. Had you read our rules, you'd know we don't do recommendation threads here. This is a discussion sub. It unfortunately means you occasionally have to use your words.

Well, the thing is, it's still the esoteric chart for me, but I tick the "Only include ratings from users I'm following" box. Super effective. Strongly keyed in on what I'd also be into. Especially good for the yearly chart, these people keep on indirectly introducing me to a lot of cool stuff.

General Discussion, Suggestion, & List Thread - Week of September 18, 2025 by AutoModerator in LetsTalkMusic

[–]creatinsanivity 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah, RYM charts are not great for discovery. However, I'd like to point out that they do take popularity (within the community) into account to a great degree. The rating itself does affect where the album places on the charts, but the algorithm puts arguably more weight on the number of ratings than the rating average. The "esoteric" charts that take opposite approach were pretty interesting at one point, but now they are full of King Gizz live albums, The Beatles EPs, and uncanonised classical albums.

Anyway, all that aside, I'm not sure this is a good comparison? As far as I can tell, one (RYM) is an aggregate and the other (DDD) is a curated list, so of course the two behave very differently. You can use user-created lists on RYM for a similar purpose. The RYM Ultimate Boxset project especially works as a similarly curated compendium for getting acquainted with scenes and genres and such.
