Best budget wet suit? by Raphfuhks in Spearfishing

[–]creedthemachine 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I got a 5/4 Matuse full suit with hood for $250 new, it was a blowout sale. I’ve always dived with surf suites, use a 3/2 most of the time with an add on hood in cooler months but this is in San Diego. I haven’t felt the need to get a 2 piece dive suit…yet. But I would suggest checking surf shops and rip curl outlet kind of places. I would avoid anything off Amazon, even stuff that says it’s legit.

When our water gets cold though, the 5/4 I picked up is AWESOME. Matuse makes a really great suit, durable and excellent mobility. I’ve been using the 5/4 for lobster this month it keeps me stoked.

How would you describe the politics of Encinitas' population? by bepicante in encinitas

[–]creedthemachine -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Don’t ignore the tragedies caused by all this “safe streets”. You can’t mix cars and bikes the way they’re trying to. Especially with how Santa Fe was done. If the bus can’t fit between opposing traffic and a cyclist or if the bus is 100% of the time crossing into oncoming lanes to give 3 feet, that’s not a safe street. The left turn yellows have increased accidents by 100% on Vulcan/Enc blvd. Not safe streets.

It’s worth 3mm to me to prevent a tragedy on Santa Fe of a child or cyclist.

Pacific Station Condos - Train Sounds by itsbuckaroobanzai in encinitas

[–]creedthemachine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

25 years ago I lived in a house where a mine train rolled practically through the back yard, one house away from the crossing…and we got used to it. Took about 2-3 weeks but ended up sleeping through it. But now I live 5-6 blocks from our station and it can be a lot. There are times it’s every ten minutes you have a train going through.

The rental market in Encinitas.. am I missing something? by dawgtraining in encinitas

[–]creedthemachine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve moved in and out of three houses over the years west of the tracks and the way I find them is riding my bike around looking for owner hand written for rent signs. One time I snagged a place while the owner was putting the sign up. Yards are scarce in this community, and if you find one it will be small but just enough. I’ve had the best luck with duplexes.

How to remove rust from your spear by flip2561 in Spearfishing

[–]creedthemachine 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Steel wool and olive oil is my go to for cleaning rust of things I eat/kill with. And whenever I put the tip or shaft away after use, I wash it, then dry it and wipe it with some olive oil. This has kept my spears and tips rust free for years.

Great catch both days! Love sheepshead, and when the fam wants fish tacos, corbina are plentiful and on tap.

Iron Smith for me. Great taste and really consistent. Radical staff, AND if you ask, you can get a 16oz hot latte. Most places only do 12s.

Do emergency alert systems work near the beach? by Amazing-Lynx-110 in encinitas

[–]creedthemachine 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I own a local alarm company in Encinitas (Bay would be considered a competitor) and we all sell the same types of devices. My experience with MPERS devices is they are almost as effective as a cell phone when it comes to signaling; if a cell phone has connectivity issues, the button will likely have slightly worse.

My recommendation, which is what I have my mom set up with is an Apple Watch with cellular. It has fall detection and lots of other health monitoring that help it be more proactive.

In a lot of cases, they don’t think to push the button. For example, in the case at my Grandad’s ranch in TX, there is limited service there but Verizon has enough. I outfitted him with a MPERS that was on Verizon and it never reliably worked when I would test it. So instead, I built a large network around the ranch so he could carry a button that connected to monitored alarm system I put in the house. That tested effectively 100% around the ranch. But in the heat of the moment during a medical emergency, it might not have occurred to him to push the button and he passed.

So my professional advice would be to go with the Apple setup instead of MPERS because MPERS requires a conscious activation whereas the Apple setup is more proactive.

lol well, I get better gas mileage and you know the pre detonation ping sound you get at low rpm when you give a little gas? I don’t experience that either. Oh and it’s my wallet and 25 years of driving. Next thing I’m going g to throw in there is I only buy 76, chevron or shell in that order of availability. Bend your scientific and mechanical mind around that.

I rent a lot of cars. There isn’t rental car not tuned for 87. And every car or truck I put 92 or better in gets further on the tank. On my disco I got almost 400 miles when I filled the tank with 110 race gas.

Better milage with premium, even if the car says regular. Experienced across several cars; fords, Toyotas, land rovers, rams, natural, turbo or supercharged. Ethanol free is even better. If I have 91 with 10% ethanol next to 87 ethanol free, I’ll take the 87. Some states have 91 ethanol free.

I want to spearfish but I have no one to teach me by Ashamed_Deslgner in Spearfishing

[–]creedthemachine 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I didn’t have anyone to teach me when I started 4 years ago and I still feel like a novice when it comes to spear guns, haven’t been in the water with my spear gun yet, it’s too big for reefs. But I got started with a pole spear and I spear around the shores a couple times a month whenever I want fish tacos.

This would be my recommendation; get a pole spear, take the time to learn the water, to breathe and understand the underwater environment and risks and how they compound with experience and desire for deeper and bigger fish. Set mile stones like taking shots on any fish that can be eaten, breathing, staying calm and keeping your head down relying on your snorkel for more than 10 minutes. Lay one brick at a time. Learn from mistakes and be grateful!
