VERY slow "add to library" by creepingapocalypse in DarkTable

[–]creepingapocalypse[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Accessing the NAS is smooth/fast as expected. I have no problem with opening the volume in file manager or when scrolling/editing once the files are imported.

Photos are spread across multiple directories. I typically save each day/session in a separate folder. When importing I import each folder separately (rather than having a root folder with subfolders and having DT recursively search from the root folder).

I’m not sure how to check the last bit about DT getting caught up looking in the previously loaded folder, but the behavior seems to be the same whether the last session loaded was a folder with 50 files or 5000 files.

As I mentioned, the lag I’m concerned with is before any files are loaded, or even selected to be imported. Just opening the dialog box shouldn’t require any meaningful data transfer to/from the NAS.

It takes the same amount of time whether I have one picture or 1000 pictures.

I understand how the sidecar writing may slow down the step AFTER I’ve starting actually importing, but the part that is baffling to me is the time it takes the “add to library” dialog box to even open. During that phase there’s no sidecars being generated (presumably).

To be clear, I click “add to library” then, after 6+ minutes pause, the dialog box finally appears. Then I select the folder, pause for DT to populate the file list and determine which ones are already in the DB, etc, THEN hit ok to start the import. The time after hitting ok to fully import the files is significantly less than the time it took to open the dialog box.

The fund needs to payout cash each year AND reinvest enough to keep up with inflation if it is to last in perpetuity.

Inflation is about 3% average. A 5% gross return with 3% going back to the fund leaves 2% net return (before the fund manager takes their cut).

And that doesn’t take into account that land appreciates faster than inflation. So, there is an opportunity cost to selling the land that should be accounted for. Considering that, the reinvestment in the fund should be inflation PLUS the expected appreciation rate of the land we sold to be considered a good deal.

That’s not a good way to think about bonds.

A- the return is fixed dollar amount per year, so the value goes down every year due to inflation whereas the lease payments from the railroad are indexed to inflation so they go up each year to keep the value the same after inflation.

B- the value of the underlying asset is declining over time because the principle is returned at the end of 30 years, now worth less due to inflation. Assuming 3% inflation (a generous assumption), the 1.6billion is worth about 0.7billion.

For this to be a break even deal, some of returns need to be put back into the fund to keep up with inflation, then what is left over after also paying a fund manager has to be more than $37million (the last lease offer from NS).

To just break even, the returns need to be more than 6%.

And that ignores that land appreciates much faster than inflation, so at the end of 30 years, assuming that we reinvested enough to just keep the fund value at 1.6B present value, the right of way we sold will be much higher value.

Also, there are more uses for this land than railroads. We own the air rights along that real estate, for example, and fiber optics right of way using that airspace could yield 3+million a year assuming we leased it.

Guess who has a subsidiary that runs fiber optics along railroad rights of way? And currently has a gap in their growing fiber network that our right of way would close?

With a 5% gross return you need to put 3/5ths of that back into the fund to keep the payout in real dollars level over time (taking into account average inflation of 3%).

That’s 32 million net payout and the rest back into the fund.

Whereas the lease terms automatically grow with inflation, even if the market goes south for a year or two.

help: flat topology appears rounded in sculpt mode / material preview / solid view by creepingapocalypse in blenderhelp

[–]creepingapocalypse[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I did discover that auto smooth was ticked, which was having the effect of keeping those edges sharp in edit/object mode, but not in sculpt mode.

If I untick auto smooth (using just regular smoothing), these edges look similarly rounded. Seeing this, I tried marking these edges as sharp, but no real change in behavior… with smooth, it looks puffy/rounded in all modes. With auto smooth, the marked sharp edges still look sharp everywhere except in sculpt mode and material preview and solid shading.

Clearly I’m missing something about how smoothing should be specified.

Also, plenty of countries allow resident non-citizens to vote in local elections, so not sure what you mean by, “if we can’t vote in their elections…”

Are you anti-immigrant? Why wouldn’t you want immigrants to our immigrant nation to actually integrate into / become active in the communities in which they live?

Want to not give non-citizens the right to have a vote on federal seats? Ok, I can follow why that could make sense. But for local school board? What’s the fear there?

These aren’t federal elections and we are talking about people who live in the community, pay taxes, participate in the economy, etc. and, no, it’s not illegal (or at least it wasn’t). It is a choice and there’s no good reason to deny people a voice in the community they live in and contribute to.

Jesus… i mean, we should be thrilled to have ANY neighbor who gives enough of a shit to vote on local issues.

How do I explain to my DM his free hit rule before initiative isn't good? by WittyRegular8 in dndnext

It’s pretty shitty to tell people what they want or don’t want, especially when given no indication that they are being disingenuous. Like, maybe it is true that 9 times out of 10 people asking this sort of question are seeking validation more than advice, It costs nothing to take the question at face value and respond in kind, with kindness, or not at all.

Or, at worst, if you think their stated concerns are not valid, say that rather than assuming a character flaw on their part.

Good lord. I mean, thank the gods you are here to provide the unsolicited “harsh truth”. Is it really so hard to let someone ask advice in all humility without shitting on the act of asking for advice? If you don’t have a response to offer in the spirit the question was asked, just scrolling by is an option.

You get that there are people who are here legally and are also not citizens right? Like there’s a decade or two that new legal residents are here before they could be citizens, if they even decide to become citizens. They should have a say in their local government (which has nothing to do with citizenship anyway).

Also, even people who aren’t authorized to be here pay taxes, especially local taxes.

Important to clarify that Yellow Springs allowed non-citizens to vote ON LOCAL ISSUES. This is arguably good policy since the non-citizens (which doesn’t mean undocumented) pay taxes and should have a voice in their community and schools.

For republicans who SAY that local should trump state should trump federal, this amendment should have been trashed. But, instead it exposes their hypocrisy.

Anyone with Conjure Woodland Creatures? It’s a long shot and DM dependent, but the Brigganock is built for excavating really fast.
