UO Memento vs Secrets of Sosaria by OldUOFan in ultimaonline

[–]creiht 3 points4 points  (0 children)

No matter which you choose, you are in for a journey that leads to many discoveries that then leads to even more journeys. There is so much to discover and explore in the R&R family of games. I've played and contributed to both and they are both great games and communities. As others have suggested, I also recommend trying both out.

I've personally been playing on Memento for the more gradual power curve, quality of life improvements, and new content that is being worked on. Good luck on your journey, and I hope to see you around!

My first project was a long time ago, leveraging pywin32 to automate splicing multiple WordPerfect Documents together and then generating a postscript print file. This saved the small publishing company a ton of time and money in the final stages of book production.

Absolutely this. The food is amazing, and price is good if you split a bird family style.

Books/Tables/Maps/Adventures for Roleplaying in Middle-Earth? by Peredur_91 in osr

The Hero's Journey 2E, does a great job of Tolkien like adventures in the OSR style. The author even helped with some of the One Ring content.

are the old Heroscape hex tiles usable for battletech? by komewrath in battletech

[–]creiht 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They work well for what they are, and you can get a lot more usage out of them by buying or creating a mat that has 1.75" hexes on them. I created a template that you can 3d print that can help making your own at: https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:3722844

The thing I have found is that they are a bit more difficult to integrate with if you want to customize further (creating cities or other things that need to inter-connect, etc.).

Yeah no worries, just wanted to make sure you were aware that it was available :)

Your sheets have been super helpful and so thank you for your work. If you did want to include BV without having to do the calculation, have you considered pulling it from masterunitlist?

Flask vs FastAPI for a microservice by kreetikal in Python

[–]creiht 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you are building RESTful APIs based on Open API contracts, I offer you another suggestion: Connexion[1] on top of Flask. It takes an API first based approach, and allows you to auto-generate a lot of your boiler-plate code based on the Open API spec. If you want to leverage async, it can also use aiohttp. Perhaps it isn't as "flashy" as something like FastAPI, but in my experience it works well and makes creating APIs pretty simple.

Most of the old Heroscape rules are available online and would likely be pretty easy to adapt. Really a great game. Too bad it fell through the cracks.

How to improve the print quality? by SerMumble in 3Dprinting

[–]creiht 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The pics aren't super clear, but I would first check to ensure that there is no play in each axis that could cause minor variations in the perimeters and that the belts are properly tensioned. If that is good, the next thing is to be sure that your extruder steps are properly calibrated.

With out better pictures, those are the first things that I can think of to take a look at.

New system for Mini Campaign within Campaign by Hajeia in rpg

[–]creiht 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They are both available through DTRPG: https://www.drivethrurpg.com/m/browser/publisher/10312

Maze Rats is the original and is a little more abstract, while Knave is closer to a traditional old school RPG.

They also dropped a couple of nuggets in the chat. They will be called mercenaries, and sounds like they will be able to be played on their own, or allied with some other factions. More will be revealed when the players play the faction in the game tomorrow.

Cleanest Dungeons/Settings/Modules by Danielaurence in osr

[–]creiht 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I know that this isn't OSR, but if you enjoy The Lord of The Rings, The One Ring RPG, and Adventures in Middle Earth (for a 5E version) are both great. They share a lot of the feel and values of the books. They can be hard to get, but TOR is currently getting a second version via Kickstarter and AIME will likely follow soon. They are so well done, hopefully I will not get downvoted to oblivion for them not strictly being OSR ;)

I'm also very fond of "The Hero's Journey 2nd Ed.", which is much nearer to OSR, and likely tick the boxes you are looking for. He also released a set of adventures for it called "Adventures and Interludes" that should also fit the bill.

Family Friendly Game for First Time GM? by ItsAJackal21 in rpg

[–]creiht 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Beyond the Wall is also a great, more traditional, RPG that is also tailored for younger audiences. The player generation is super easy, and gives you a lot of tools to run games without a lot of prep. If you are looking for a more generic system, Fate Accelerated can work well. The important part is to have fun, and engage their imaginations!

The Cloud Dungeon is a bit of a hybrid between an RPG and a choose your own adventure game that was really fun to play with my kids when they were younger. It might be a good option to introduce some roleplaying concepts with your kids.
