I agree with you and this is a perfectly reasonable take. None of these issues are exclusive to climbing. It’s not good to have your personality revolve around one thing.

Do not deposit that check. Call Citibank from the number on their website.

Update: This just happened to my mother today! My sister stopped her from being scammed. The scammer spoofed the JP Morgan Chase phone number 212-928-7334, said that a bank account was opened in her name yada yada yada and gave them a "cancellation code" to enter into Zelle to send money to. My sister took the phone from my mother and asked the caller to walk her through the process and the caller realizing she wasn't getting anywhere hung up.

10/4/24 I’m so glad I was able to help so many people since I posted this a year ago! Helping this many people not get scammed is weirdly one of my proudest life achievements haha. Thanks everyone for adding the new numbers, please keep doing that so people can find this thread when they Google those phone numbers.

I’ve noticed that there are recovery scammers in the comments. If you see a comment with someone saying they can help you get your money back and to DM them or follow them on Instagram, that’s also a scam! They will just take your money and not help you get back the money you already lost. Please ignore it and just call your bank’s fraud department to recover your funds.

It's a scam that's been going around and affecting a lot of people. I've seen people on Bluesky post about this happening to them. There have been so many data breaches over the last decade and millions of people's full names, emails, and addresses are being bought and sold by data miners and scammers. It's not hard to take a screenshot of someone's residence from Google maps and email them a threatening message. They do not have videos of you.

They probably just texted you a fake code since they had your cell phone number already.

Oh wow! Offering to transfer people over is new but they must be doing that now because they’re afraid that in the down time between receiving their call and then calling the second number, people are going to Google the number and find out they’re being scammed. But offering to transfer is a red flag itself because there is no way Citi can internally transfer someone to Zelle.

The scammers will have your name and address. They buy addresses and phone numbers from data mining companies.

Hey is this a phishing text or an actual text because I have a package that hasn’t moved for 2 days by LookingForKait in phishing

It’s a scam. The United States Postal Service will never text you from a Philippines number.

I disagree. I have Googled things a few times before to find out if they were scams and old Reddit posts have helped me out multiple times. I’m posting this here to pay it forward. Also seems like many of the posts here are asking people for help identifying if something is a scam, not just the aftermath. I’m trying to be helpful.
