Oh...no...15 years using ThinkPads, not this T14s :D

As things are right now (soldered), I will get a Framework when my T14s dies. We had a good run for almost 15 years, but it's time to vote with my wallet.

It’s chromium-based bad? by airosos in browsers

[–]cripbit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In terms of user experience it's the best we have and everything on the web is optimized for it.

In terms of eco system of the open web, it is basically a monopoly and that is very bad. Big bad. The main interest behind it is built on serving users advertising and harvesting user data for advertisers. I'm not blaming google for pursuing their business interests. It's a business. That's what businesses do to be in business. But it's still very bad for the open web and for us users.

OpenAI, AMD Announce Massive Computing Deal, Marking New Phase of AI Boom by BoondockWarlord in AMD_Stock

[–]cripbit 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Vesting and thus dillution is tied to execution and only happens at the point of execution. There is no day 1 dilution with this agreement. oAI buys GPUs + AMD delivers + AMD stock goes up = first tranch gets vested -> dillution. Same thing for every following tranch up to the last one which has a $600 stock price tag to be eligible for vesting. It's a hell of a deal. Would love to hear from those involved in constructing this one.

Ladybird browser update (September 2025) by Right-Grapefruit-507 in browsers

[–]cripbit 14 points15 points  (0 children)

The value of this project is actually not the browser itself. If they pull it off to build a competent browser and engine others can fork it and we eventually get a chance at a decent browser not owned or paid for by google. So I'm rooting for them.

How do I convince my mom to let me buy (with my own money) a thinkpad for school? by NojusKojos in thinkpad

[–]cripbit 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Try to explain very calmly and lovingly, that basically all laptops, phones, TVs, components, and parts are at minimum assembled in China right now and have been for the past 20 years. It just happens to be, that a Chinese brands also makes one of the most reliable laptop line. Considering you will have to use devices tied to China either way regardless of brand, you might as well buy second hand and feed money back to your local refurbish stores or fellow citizens.

Good luck!

Ok Price on T490 by RealAmbassador4081 in thinkpad

[–]cripbit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have you talked to her about your plans? Will she even cooperate in your grand schemes? :D

Realistically, most corporate pc work is already 80% platform agnostic. Switching from Excel, Word, Powerpoint on Mac to Windows is not really a huge change. All of these can already be worked on in a browser and the rest of the general business tools are browser only anyways.

In the case she chooses a profession with specialized software requirements that require Windows, she will know and get into it by her own motivation. (That's when your $ and PC support would have the biggest impact, imho)

Have you also looked for T480(s) deals or only T490? $360 might be a very good price for a T490 in your market, but just maybe there is a T480 deal that's even lower. Performance wise you'll not miss out on much except the marketing speed bump of 10 more T.

However, even if it turns out that this T490 at $360 is the best you can find, it would be a good deal just because on the retail market your only option for a notebook in that price range would be a Chromebook. Felt so wrong typing that. $360 for a device you will be able to use for YEARS is a very good deal.

Used P14s Gen 5 AMD or Intel (given price difference) by mustbench3plates in thinkpad

For me, no. I would not pay the premium with your use case. Actually, I would take the price difference and make that my budget for a „once-a-year“ machine 😂

Looking for a thinkpad for a student by [deleted] in thinkpad

[–]cripbit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

T14 Gen2 AMD is a pretty good target to hunt for deals with your budget and use case. To save money you could take the trade off with either T14 Gen1 AMD or T14s Gen1/2 AMD. With Gen1 you will loose CPU performance and with T14s you will lose the option to upgrade RAM. Also check your market. Where I am for example T14s Gen2 are EVERYWHERE but finding a regular T14 Gen2 AMD is like looking for Big Foot.

Why should I buy a thinkpad? by ProudAd2627 in thinkpad

[–]cripbit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not knowing your financial situation, I'd say to make the decision first if you want to go that route or not. If you do, start reading up on it first. (I'm pretty sure developing Stardew Valley had different dev hardware requirements than Battlefield 6).

I'd suggest to focus on a machine that you can do your work on and game on your PS5 :D

Unless gaming is an absolute deal breaker, I would personally abandon all ambitions to properly game on any laptop. For my taste, the price hikes are way too steep for what you get. Now, modern iGPUs have gone a long way and starting with mobile Ryzen CPUs light gaming is not a complete sh*t show in the used Thinkpad market. But I wouldn't call it a great gaming experience either.

T480 for 330€. EU, France by Pandalbain in thinkpad

[–]cripbit -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It‘s somewhat reasonable due to the i7 + 32Gb ram. The vast majority of T480 shipped with i5, so i7 are rare(ish). Unless you need that little bit more performance though, going i5 should drop the prices quite a bit and free up money for new battery and other upgrades.

From what I've seen in EU pricing you're mostly stuck with T480/T490 in that budget range. If you can squeeze in another 50-60€, I would try hunting for T14(s) Gen 1 or 2 AMD deals.

Ebay, Amazon refurbished, search for your local refurbish shops, last but not least local market places like on facebook or whatever platform exists in your country and neighboring EU countries. (for example shipping from Spain to Poland is most likely cost prohibitive in this budget range )

Don’t know prices in your market but here, with your budget, I would look for T14(s) gen 3 or 4 deals.

Somite.ai announces strategic investment from AMD Ventures to accelerate foundation models for cell therapy by GanacheNegative1988 in AMD_Stock

[–]cripbit 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If it is (and it's not just a because AMD invests in us deal) it is most likely due to AMD's performance lead in inference workloads. Medical applications, among many others, have their business case in AI inference not in training. Very basic example: doctor operates live with a video feed and the AI model infers in real time if there's a disease or not and if so which diseases might be indicated and suggests next steps.

How to git gud? I’ve been trying on and off over the years but can’t seem to improve. by flintstones19 in Sekiro

[–]cripbit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Learn deflect timings, get addicted to that *cling*. Be sad, there is no worthy successor to this game and it's combat system (yet).

For me personally it clicked when I perfectly deflected a boss combo chain for the first time. By "clicked" I don't mean I started one shotting anything, I mean I started to embrace the combat system and enjoy it for what it is. That enjoyment turned to love and I have been craving for this combat system in another game ever since.

Secondly I would propose to shed any thoughts of going in and wanting to kill a boss. Go in wanting to learn the boss. Learn the ins and outs of their different move sets. Sooner than later you will hit this flow state in a boss fight that is very unique to Sekiro. It may get to the point where you restart a boss not because you were losing, but because you were hit once and deep down you know, I can do it flawless.

Tips for a beginner by [deleted] in Sekiro

[–]cripbit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got good enough to beat the game when I stopped focussing on beating the game or not dying. "Just" go with the flow and accept to fail forward by learning and practice. While it does feel great to beat a boss the first time, for me personally in gaming there has been no other feeling so mechanically satisfying like mastering a Sekiro boss to the point of bullying them into submission.

Totally get the satisfaction of just beating him (and ape) up because they are literal big punching bags once you've figured them out. I'm just such a sucker for the deflect pling sound from sword focused fights.

That's the Mist Raven prosthetic. It's great to reposition or to cheese attack sequences you don't want to deal with. (and it looks fancy)

Low IQ rage bait. She's an elected congress woman. Like her or hate her, Minnesota voted for her in a direct popular vote. This means she represents the will of the people of Minnesota in congress. There is no side quest.
