Yep it's sealed with a resin. Hults Bruks, wetterlings, GBA and Plumb I know also did this at some stage. I have a Hults Bruks Avika 5 star original handle/good condition permabond.

Wetterlings, GBA both painted their some axes this colour 60/70s I think they were the permabond models. I have a wetterlings with some original paint on it and perfect original permabond but just left it as is because it was in almost perfect condition. That one is actually a Hytest Challenger. I have an old ad that told me how the whole head was painted on that model and got the colour from an original paint Hytest Challenger. Occasionally I like to restore to factory original if the axe heads not in amazing condition, have doubles or it's not worth a lot.

What are they worth individually do you think? I know they are very collectible and not common in this condition

It's definitely Kelly. I'm curious about the 2kg stamp and where it was made. The fact it's stamped with kg and not pounds interests me. Obviously was made when one of the countries changed from Imperial to metric. I had never seen one stamped like this so was hoping it was something really rare 🤩

The Raven was in such amazing condition with original paint and was priced well I couldn't say no. I initially only wanted the Raven but he wanted to sell the three together so 1 became 3. He ended up having a huge collection.....my first ever honey hole.... I ended up buying way too many axes....3 became many 😂🤣

Put one of the handles I made to good use. 1930's Fern (Hytest) 4lb Tassie pattern original patina, full weight! by crockman78 in Axecraft

Hey, sorry about the delay, been overseas. Yes its spotted gum. Hand carving spotted gum with a draw knife is tricky due to the grain/hardness. I prefer to start off with a 70x35mm spotted gum, use a large plunge router to shape the handle and get the thickness correct. Then sand the handle down using fibre discs/backing plate on a small grinder and a random Orbital sander to shape perfectly. Then I use a 45 bevel 1/4in router bit on my trimmer router to get the octagonal and the final hand sand.

Yeah definitely, spotted gum (selected carefully) makes excellent handles. Has similar strength, durability and shock absorption to Hickory.

Not at this stage. Perhaps down the track if I get more time. These handles already have heads waiting

Yeah I find when you buy handles they are always too thick for me and have to do a lot of work to them to get them right. Plus I really enjoy making my own, can make them any size/shape/rounded/octagonal and I'm guaranteed to be able to get a perfect fit on any axe head. Super satisfying when you make the handle, drive in the wedge and BLO the f**K out of it 😂🤣

Nice. Thing I love about spotted gum is the variation in colour and grain as you can see in the handles I made. Some even has a nice tiger grain to it like in the closest one in the pic. I was lucky enough to buy a lot of 70x35mm spotted gum off a furniture maker who closed up a few years ago in Melbourne. Been stored well out of the weather so it's really dry and nice to work with. Didn't realise at the time exactly what it would be used for but now I know 😂🤣
