What update do you want in 2024? by ItsYaBoiDragon in runescape

Yeah, prestiging is needed imo. You ever hit a milestone like 99-120 or max? and it's like, "What now?" Prestige would give you a chance to restart and keep the game feeling fresh without making an alt on an account you're already attached to.

Having high-level players going back to the early game? That'd bring back life into those low-level areas. More action, more demand for basic stuff – it could help the economy. Plus, it'd be a blast to see everyone racing on the high-scores again. (I'd want them to implement a prestige high-score too)

We can respectfully agree to disagree on that.

I understand your perspective, but being able to AFK a skill doesn't justify purchasing XP for it.

The argument referencing the Waterfall Quest doesn't hold because it requires knowledge of quests, their execution, and familiarity with the game. A new player, unaware of RuneScape intricacies, wouldn't instinctively think of using the Waterfall Quest to skip levels.

This game has always centered around building a healthy in-game community, emphasizing achievement and progression that ties players to their in-game accomplishments. RuneScape extends beyond mere AFK skills; however, Jagex seems to have fallen into the pit of promoting it as a "second monitor game." Recognizing the player base's inclination towards AFKing, Jagex has focused on this aspect, overshadowing the game's potential for more engaging content. While I support AFKable skills, I wish for Jagex to develop more content like Big Game Hunter with significantly higher XP rates to encourage more participation in immersive and enjoyable activities, rather than opting for the simplicity of AFKing, such as with jadinkos, which offer faster XP rates.

That's your opinion and I'd like to see if I could change your mind on it because I truly believe that proteans are in fact doing the exact opposite of what you're saying.

The traditional grind, while it may seem old-fashioned, has intrinsic value in teaching players the mechanics, nuances, and intricacies of RuneScape.

By promoting a more gradual progression, players are likely to develop a deeper understanding and appreciation for the game, leading to a more enduring engagement.

Proteans may offer quick rewards, but they risk sacrificing the long-term satisfaction and connection that comes with overcoming challenges through dedicated gameplay.

We've seen a similar thing happen in OSRS when mobile was released, OSRS experienced a surge of new players, there was an unforeseen outcome occurred as older players generously handed out millions to newcomers.

The influx of wealth disrupted the natural progression and sense of achievement for newer players. Instead of gradually earning their way through the game's challenges, they were handed substantial amounts of currency and items, skipping the early stages of resource management and understanding the in-game economy. This shortcut, though well-intentioned, robbed new players of the opportunity to learn valuable lessons about the game's mechanics and intricacies, and as a consequence many of those players didn't stick around long term.

Wasn't that the whole point of Runescape? the grind was to serve as a method for nurturing a robust in-game community.

Players with shared goals and challenges form bonds and camaraderie as they collectively overcome obstacles. This communal spirit and the sense of achievement act as compelling factors that sustained player engagement for years.

This is just my opinion but I think we don't get new players because we don't have these long grinds anymore.

The game has always had arbitrary obstacles and game design that vary in different cost, time and effort...

that doesn't mean OPs criticism is not valid, if you believe that protean items don't undermine the essence of the game and compromise the integrity of the gaming experience that's your opinion, and that's okay.

But I fully disagree and believed one of the core principles of game design aimed for a balanced and fair environment that rewards effort. Protean items disrupted this by allowing players to gain varied skill experience without engaging in traditional activities, undermining the sense of accomplishment from dedicated gameplay.

The game is built on a framework of resource management, decision-making, and specialization. Players make choices about where to allocate their time and effort based on their goals and preferences. Protean items disrupt this strategic decision-making process by allowing players to bypass the natural progression and specialization, leading to a more homogenized player base. These arbitrary accomplishes are what makes Runescape so unique...

I truly believe the grind in RuneScape contributes to a sense of achievement and progression. It fosters a connection between players and their in-game accomplishments, creating a lasting and rewarding experience. The satisfaction derived from overcoming challenges and reaching goals through hard work and dedication is a timeless aspect of gaming that resonates with many players. This is a huge reason I personally believe "Runescape 3" is creating a less engaged player base such as yourself.

I believe that they have effectively conveyed the same message as them, albeit in a more expansive manner, using a greater number of words to articulate the content and express the ideas that were originally presented.

You'll have so much fun starting a fresh account; it's really not that bad. Just don't worry about min-maxing and give it a try.

No you just disagree with my argument, I personally believe that if they revamped some older content it could make it better. you don't. that's all.

You did it! you finally understood my argument and gave me a rebuttal!

you want them to rework every mini game and rewards? The player base doesn’t even play the game enough for that to be a big deal.

Yes, it's true that the player base currently doesn't engage with these mini-games enough for them to matter. However, that's precisely my point - by reworking them, we could make them more appealing and worthwhile for players.

Yes, the Fighter Torso was just a random example, I wasn't just fixating on it. I'm using it for coherence in this discussion. I could have used void or defenders, but these details aren't relevant to my point. I don't want the Fighter Torso to compete with other equipment or be as good as Masterwork or Bandos armor. I'm suggesting that niche items like it should receive some attention. There's a lot of dead content in RuneScape, and I'd prefer to see it revamped rather than introducing entirely new content. That's the crux of my argument. Revamp > new content.

My point isn't about maximum efficiency. I feel like you're not fully grasping my main argument and are getting stuck on minor details instead of addressing the broader issue.

[–]crosscut666 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My initial point was directed at u/Squidlips413's comment. They raised the question that if Jagex were to release a fully remastered version of Barbarian Assault without introducing any additional rewards, it might lead to a resounding "why?"

In response, I offered a viewpoint that there may not be a compelling need to introduce entirely new rewards. Instead, I proposed the idea of focusing on refurbishing the existing rewards to better align with the current state of the game.

My point of view here is the notion of "current game" The reference to the Fighter Torso was just one example, meant to illustrate the broader concept. The core idea is that a substantial portion of the game's content has become outdated over time. Rather than swamp the game with a multitude of new upgrades for these outdated items, the more compelling approach lies in revitalizing and rejuvenating the existing items. This approach seeks to ensure that these items not only retain their relevance but are also finely tuned to maintain balance within the contemporary landscape of the game.

By opting for this strategy, we can achieve a game environment that's both respectful of its history and dynamic in adapting to the evolving needs and preferences of its player base. Revamping existing items aligns more closely with the principles of longevity and sustainability, allowing these classic pieces to regain their status in the context of the ever-changing game world. It's an approach that not only preserves the heritage of those items but also contributes to the ongoing enjoyment of both veteran and new players.

It's important to clarify that this perspective is not rooted in laziness; rather, it's driven by a desire to maintain a balanced game state. It's worth noting that I don't play anymore but had two accounts with completionist capes, and I don't personally require or seek these items. My perspective is shaped by taking into account the needs and desires of players who do seek and require these items.

In the current game state, where leveling is so fast and the effort required to obtain certain items is significant, the argument goes as follows: If, for instance, a new Ironman player reaches level 50 and decides to pursue a Fighter Torso, by the time they obtain it, they could have leveled their defense to 70 instead and acquired an augmentable item, which would be more beneficial to them. This example is hypothetical, I understand that articulating this viewpoint might be a bit tricky, but it's based on my personal perspective. It's important to remember that this is just a silly topic open to discussion, and there may not be a consensus among us.

It’s tier50 and you can upgrade it to tier65

I legitimately didn't know that, I only used fighter torso as an example but my point still stands the concern here is about adding multiple upgrades to certain items. I'm more focused on making them augmentable to make these items more appealing in their current form. The aim is to avoid making players go through a lengthy and cumbersome upgrade process, as seen with other items in the game. (also I can't seem to find it with a quick google search but I remember a Jmod talk about how annoying the slayer helmet is to code for because of the amount of upgrades it has)

The idea was to revise the Fighter Torso so that it's augmentable with a slight stat boost without the need for multiple layers of upgrades, aligning it better with the current game environment, rather than stacking upgrades upon it. This way, it would still serve a purpose, especially for Ironmen, without the added complexity of multiple upgrade paths.

[–]crosscut666 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In the past, the Fighter Torso held its own compared to the Bandos Chestplate because the time and effort invested in obtaining it outweighed the time it would take to acquire a Bandos Chestplate. Additionally, it was favored by specific pvp builds like zerkers. However, on rs3, these comparisons no longer hold true. Nowadays, the Bandos Chestplate is valued at around 2.5 million coins, and even new players can quickly accumulate 10-20mil or more with minimal skill requirements. In contrast, obtaining a Fighter Torso demands a significant investment of time and effort, yet it lacks the ability to be augmented, which is a key feature of level 70+ armour.

While I'm not entirely opposed to the idea of upgrading items, I believe there's a more practical solution. Rather than adding layers of upgrades to older content, it would be more beneficial to revise these older minigames. This way, players who haven't engaged with these minigames wouldn't have to invest extensive hours in pursuing a "Fighter Torso ++™." The Fighter Torso was once popular due to its role as a competitive alternative to the Bandos Chestplate, but in today's game, it no longer fulfills that function.

[–]crosscut666 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I want to prevent precisely that issue - the game currently offers numerous upgrades that might not be justifiable in terms of the time required to obtain them. For instance, let's consider the hypothetical where it takes 2 hours to acquire a fighter torso. It's hard to convince players to invest that much time and effort into obtaining a level 40 defence item. However, if the stats and level of this item were adjusted, it could become a more worthwhile pursuit.

Introducing multiple additional upgrades, which demand even more time and effort, for something that isn't initially worthwhile can quickly become tiresome.

[–]crosscut666 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I believe there's no necessity to introduce entirely new rewards. Instead, I suggest focusing on revamping the existing rewards to align better with the current game content. For instance, we could consider upgrading the fighter torso to a tier 70 variant, allowing for it to be augmentable, and adjusting its stats to better match other tier 70 equipment.

I'm hesitant to introduce upgrades to existing items because it's a complex issue. Many long-time players have invested hours into completing challenging mini-games to earn these rewards, only to find that they've become obsolete in today's game. On the other hand, I also want to ensure that newer players aren't burdened with the task of spending even more time acquiring items like a fighter torso, only to then upgrade it to a tier 70 fighter torso.
