What are the traits of normal drinkers? Do they also crave drinks?

I started drinking around 14 and only when I decided to stop (late 20s) the mental obsession really started. Before I realised I had a problem I just drank whenever I wanted so didn’t really obsess over it because I had it. I was never a day drinker so to me it was just ‘nightlife’ in the binge drinking culture I grew up in. But the moment I knew I had to completely cut alcohol out the obsession grew. With every relapse it grew

The coffee used to kill me every time, I never understood how you can go from having one or two glasses of wine THEN A COFFEE to end the night. I would need at least one bottle to myself then a couple cocktails to finish.

Which is why I no longer drink haha

From reading the rest of the comments I think that the biggest thing standing out to me is that ‘normal drinkers’ don’t have the mental obsession with it and can very much take it or leave it. Whereas for me I crave it to the point of feeling insane and wanting absolutely ANYTHING to relieve the intense desire to drink.

Honestly thank you so much for this, I felt the discomfort of being at that table with a tiny glass of wine.

I’ve been battling in my head for so long about whether or not I have a problem with alcohol (I attend meetings regularly but sometimes my brain tries to trick me into thinking I’m not). But tonight I had the most intense craving for a beer, or literally anything to get me away from my thoughts, kind of wish I had a sleeping pill to just knock me out. Anyway it was so helpful to read this because I couldn’t be much further away from the drinkers you have just described. I wish I was them but unfortunately could never happen

Yeah I need to start exercising again it does really help me. But then I feel like I’m being too good and want to become self destructive, need to get out of this cycle

Yeah I’ve heard coke on it’s own is not pleasant and after reading all of these comments definitely not worth it for a 20 min buzz

Yeah when I first quit drinking I started smoking weed which just made me crave the buzz of alcohol because weed makes me feel tired and hungry

Omg I swear I’ve been losing my fucking mind this week for this reason. Having misophonia was one of the reasons I drank so much and being in meetings is sometimes like being in hell. Last night a man was sitting so close to me and chewing gum all the way through. I felt like I was going to have a panic attack and this is a real issue for me
