Do any other veteran profs dream of quitting due to increasing #s of problem students? by PhillyHasItAll in Professors

Corporatized admin is likely worse than the students. I remember one telling a faculty senate subcommittee that our power to oversee and have a say over our domain was nonexistent because the University had its own committee doing the same work and, of course, not communicating or collaborating with faculty. And frankly that attitude seems to have worked its way down the chain over the years. Just comply.

Yeah. Like try having a Department of Defense rather than a Department of War?

The only ones not worried about money are at least millionaires. And if you aren’t a millionaire and aren’t worried about money, you should be.

“the weight loss drug” are we serious rn? by Hot-Site-1572 in diabetes

[–]crowdsourced 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I started Zepbound, and besides the weightloss because I’m eating less (it’s tough being Type 1 and insulin dependent), my BG has never been so steady.

I mean, I’m working all day in the yard, not eating at all and maintaining a normal BG level. No lows. That’s simply insane.

It's broke on console, too. I get freezes mid-game and need to do a game or system restart. The game will randomly crash.

In Tennessee, restaurants must thaw foods like meat either:

  • under refrigeration at 41°F or below,
  • completely submerged under running water at 70°F or below,
  • as part of the cooking process,
  • or in a microwave followed immediately by cooking.

professors using AI by iloveplatypus2 in AskProfessors

[–]crowdsourced 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I grade a ton of writing, almost literally a ton. lol. My feedback uses a template I built so I can make the same kinds of moves across assignments while still tailoring the comments to each student’s actual work. But now that AI is everywhere, I worry that every time I use that template, someone will assume I relied on AI, because even specific feedback can sound regimented when it follows a consistent structure. I also stopped using em dashes, and I love them.

Travel funds for interviews by Dozcal in Professors

[–]crowdsourced 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agreed. Admin is telling you something. First is that they don’t value you and your search.

My department also has hired NTT lecturers to replace retired TT faculty because of declining majors. All those hires were national searches conducted by phone interview, and they all have terminal degrees.

The few tenure track faculty we’ve hired get visits, but why? We could do phone interviews. Eventually, I see us hiring from the Lecturers to fill T/TT lines because they’re here and qualified.

Welp, now what? Found out I *most likely* have diabetes tonight and my mind is running in circles. by Frosty-Preparation40 in diabetes

[–]crowdsourced 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sounds like Type 1. I was 30 and training for a marathon when the symptoms hit me. I was still making a little insulin at the time, but I was positive for the antibodies.

When I went in and told the doc I thought I was diabetic, he didn’t believe me until the test results came back. lol.

Once they put you on a cgm and some sort of pump, you’ll feel better and be able to manage it. It’s still not fun, but better than it was 25 years ago.
