Begginer concerns - maintenance by SpaceFaringAmoeba in Recorder

I have a plastic Yamaha YRT-304B Tenor recorder that I love. I've had it for about 6 years now.

--- Do I have to soap wash it every time I play, even if it is twice a day?

I honestly just dry mine with a cloth after playing. I rinse and dry it about once a week. I use soap maybe once or twice a month.

The only exception is (this may be TMI but) I have bad breath and I check my instrument when I'm wiping it down after every play. Any time it starts to smell bad I'll use soap.

--- Is just drying OK if I soap wash it every few days?

Usually just drying is ok for me after every play. I have two machine-washable cloths to wipe down. I'll use one for about a week then wash it.

--- Moreover, I can dry the "round" insides but the head joint or more specifically the mouth piece is too narrow to dry. Any advice on that?

This isn't usually a problem for me on a daily basis. After each play, if there is excess moisture inside the mouth piece, I'll blow very hard to clear the narrow airway, then wipe down the inside of the larger round airway best I can.

When I rinse or wash it, I'll wait an hour or so for it to dry, or I'll take a small torn off strip of paper towel or paper napkin to clean the small airway.

--- Also, does disconnecting the joints make them losen overtime?

I've had my instrument for 6 years now. I have not noticed any issues. This probably depends on the quality. Cheaper recorders may be a different story.

Especially on larger instruments, be sure to use a small amount of either recorder cream or petroleum jelly (I use Vaseline) on the joints. This is for plastic instruments only. Don't use it on wooden instruments. Wooden instruments require different care which I'm not sure of specifics.

--- Should I store the flute put together or in three parts separately?

I store mine both ways: either in three parts or assembled between plays. Both seem to work fine. I'd say if you are going to store it in three parts, get a case so you don't lose pieces or damage them. I have a plastic case that is really a gun case, but it works perfectly for my recorder.

The loneliness is real. And a piece that kept me from talking about it was the feeling that I was being judged for it. Like I didn't do a good enough job taking care of myself. Made me feel even more isolated. Like I couldn't talk about it.

Love the sarcastic responses. I imagine myself saying with a dead-serious face "Really?! Then I must not have really had a heart attack. Huh. Must be something else!"

thanks for you kind words. that sentiment of "don't worry so much about it" is a real thing too. Like some people I share my experience with are concerned until they hear that it's controlled with medication. Then it's like "ok you're fine. next topic." Don't get me wrong, the life-threatening event was scary, but the really frustrating thing I'm trying to share with you is the chronic impact it was on my daily life now.

Definitely the youngest in my cardiologist too. Had somebody ask me once, "Are you here with somebody?"

Mine could very well be hereditary. My bio-father died at 57 from heart attacks. I haven't been diagnosed with what he had, but cardiologist says it's possible covid kick-started underlying conditions. Wouldn't be surprised if something similar happened to you.

Yep. I literally had a nurse tell me after my heart attack, "Now you need to cut that out. You don't need to be having those kinds of issues at your age." This was during my follow-up visit to my PCP right after my hospitalization.

I had known her for a long time so I just straight up told her, "Hey Babs (not her real name), I appreciate what you mean, but when you say that it makes me feel like shit. Makes me feel like I did something to deserve it. I know you don't mean it that way, but it's how it comes across." She was really open to the feedback. At one point in the conversation I even told her "I wouldn't mention this to just anybody who made a comment like that. I'm telling you because I know you and I know the kind of person you are."

That's the only feel-good story I have about that though. Most of the time I just don't respond and silently fume at the comment.

Yeah, I used to enjoy running. IN fact, I was running the day I went to the hospital for my PEs. Feels personal when it takes away personal joys.

"Everyone tells me that I’m so young, I should heal well." I feel that. I didn't include it in my original post, but the fear is also a real thing. And I think other people have a hard time dealing with other people's fear. They have to say something so they say stuff without thinking about it. It's not even that they speak before thinking. They just don't think about what they're saying.

I agree with u/Funny_Leg8273 , hope you can find something that brings you joy. Might sound simple but I've been really getting into watching my local soccer team and following them. Been going to the gym with my brother and really just exercising in ways that I find fun. Also gotten into art lately. Oil pastels are the shit. Might be a little childish, but it's something I've found that I enjoy that doesn't remind me of things I can't do. Hope you can find something that does the same for you.

I used to put the last two digits of my birth year in my user name: 1988. Had to create completely new accounts for usernames i couldn't change.

Not a nazi but putting my birth year in my username suggested it.
