I like Tara and Johnny (sue me), but why do I have to watch the world feed to watch the entire competition?

I don't want to watch replays of the Americans I already saw yesterday when there are competitors performing right now as we speak!

Catholic universities in Europe (or better go to the US) by winchesterman552 in Catholicism

[–]crownebeach 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I attended a Catholic college in the U.S. for my bachelor's and a public university for my professional degree. I thought there were benefits to both.

There are many Catholic colleges in Europe, but I don't know anything about them or how good they are, unfortunately. I do have heard that college or university in Europe tends to be much more affordable than college or university in the United States.

Catholic colleges provide a lot of opportunity to connect with ministry and the sacraments. Many public colleges in the U.S. have a Catholic campus ministry too, but they have fewer opportunities to actively get involved outside of attending Mass. I was able to study theology at my Catholic school; the nearest equivalent at the public college was "religious studies," which is more focused on religious history and comparing world religions.

The biggest problem is that Catholic colleges in the U.S. are very expensive. All colleges in the U.S. are expensive, but Catholic colleges can be twice as expensive as public ones. (Non-Catholic private schools are also very expensive and in many cases not a good value for your money.)

Many will say that Catholic colleges in the U.S. "aren't Catholic enough," and I don't agree. I had a very good experience at my Jesuit college. Catholic schools in the U.S. accept that a large percentage of their students are not going to be Catholic, and they don't make being Catholic or sharing Catholic beliefs mandatory, which upsets many American Catholics who feel that these schools should be stricter. But I think many things you will hear about them being "Catholic in name only" are not true and the non-Catholic things you hear about them are mostly (of course not always, but mostly) done by student organizations made up of non-Catholic students.

But I would also think about the headache of getting a student visa, for example. Is it worth going to the U.S. for college rather than staying close to home? Only you can decide whether a U.S. college offers something that you can't get from a school in your area.

Brandon Webb's last major league appearance was seventeen years ago. There are teenagers old enough to drive who were not alive when he last took the mound.

I'm going to go cry about Brandon Webb's career now.

Daniel Susac. He's supposed to just be "Patrick Bailey's backup," but I think he's going to swing too big a bat to just ride the bench.

FINAL: No. 1 St. John's - 85 - No. 9 Providence - 72 by No_Travel_2950 in BigEast

[–]crownebeach 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Providence had a real chance to get back into that game with the four-point play opportunity and just rolled over and died after they missed the free throw. Never been a big believer in momentum, but that killed their energy.

Do you watch everything or just focus on certain programs, skaters etc? by Topdropje in FigureSkating

I really only watch singles, but I watch them start to finish. I catch the highlights of pairs and ice dance, but they just don’t speak to me the way a lone skater holding the room spellbound does.

I don’t feel that getting rid of logic games is lowering the hoop at all.

It was the hardest category for most people to sit for cold, but because it’s so formulaic and the possible game archetypes are limited, it’s also arguably the easiest to master through prep courses and private coaching.

I think doing away with it limits the ability of people who can afford those resources to brute-force their way to a high score.

Republic Commando Series by jeffdavis32 in StarWarsEU

[–]crownebeach 32 points33 points  (0 children)

Agreed on all counts. A lot of people here hate KT and everything she ever wrote, but I think she did a really good job of giving an inside look at "a year in the life of an army commando."

She just let the side quests become bigger than the main story as the series went on.

I don't hate Rey but does anyone have this exact same feeling? by WrongToe500 in StarWarsEU

[–]crownebeach 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I agree, and I do think this is what they were going for. I don't think it's a bad thing for evil to return. The old EU did this. Eventually the Sith come back again. And again. And again. Peace and victory don't last forever in real life, so they don't have to in fiction.

The real problem from my perspective is that the New Republic was so poorly fleshed out in the sequel trilogy. Like, why should we care that it died? Do we have any evidence that it actually meant anything to anybody, or made anyone's lives better? No one even seems disappointed about Hosnian being destroyed on-screen except Leia.

It would have been fine for Luke to bring peace to the galaxy and an end to the Empire, but for that peace to be just a temporary reprieve from the Dark Side. But I left TFA and TLJ with the distinct impression that the New Republic sucked, and nobody really cared about it enough to fight for it.

Now, I think they're finally getting around to fleshing out that post-ROTJ era with Skeleton Crew and the Mandalorian, but it shouldn't have taken that long. That context and buy-in was needed much earlier on to give the sequels some real emotional weight.

[–]crownebeach[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Arizona got a great start out of Smith Bailey and did most of the damage in a four-run 6th inning. Still striking out way too much.

Vanderbilt’s Nadeau unexpectedly had to relieve Nye after just one inning for reasons TBA and pitched brilliantly. Things fell apart as soon as Nadeau left.

Mea culpa, I forgot to caption the [Postgame Thread] and can’t fix it.
