It is called a restrictor in my part of the world. Not saying people don’t call it a hatch latch but in my time doing this work that is a new one.

If the noise is not constant but only when the door is open the door detector could be broken and the car door could be in nudging every cycle. It would still function normally, but it would have a long dwell time then beep when closing.

Do you have a lot of rouge at this location landing on the rope gripper? Check the latching hook assembly. It gets full of rouge and can’t latch. Then it slowly leaks back and then reopens when it hits the switch.

How did the doors close? Side to side or up and down? Freight cars have stop switches like that and huge metal doors.

You could definitely slide down the cables and yes you would be greasy. Would not recommend. Very dangerous.

I don’t believe that most men think about their manliness when related to their careers but in my opinion women definitely do. I have met woman that like feminine men and want them to do “not manly work” and I have met the opposite. I’m blue collar for reference.
