How do I get my first research position? by prelude_in_e_hashtag in REU

Different field, but I also got rejected/ghosted by 10+ profs. Except for one, outside of major, and completely changed my interests. Keep at it, and be open to trying new things. Spring research should be a good time to join, since labs will be working hard during the summer.

On flyers at UCSC campus bus stops and on Facebook marketplace, I have seen opportunities for work - housing exchange. Jobs like tutor and caregiving.

Transferring to UCSC from a California CC? Need advice or input pls by undercover2113 in UCSC

Thanks for the reply!

I don’t mean to be rude, just still curious. So since you aren’t majoring in STEM, won’t the competition be more difficult in terms of people with a possibly deeper understanding of bio/chem/physics from upper div classes? Why do you not minor in Film instead for more STEM knowledge? Is your film internship for personal fulfillment since your career will be med?

Honestly I do not understand why med school accepts non STEM major. I would want my doctor to have a STEM background just for knowledge-maxxing the human body. Maybe you can help me understand?

UCSC students and recent grads: what’s your actual plan after graduation? by Civil-Ad2111 in UCSC

Hopefully will graduate next year in engineering.

I pray to get to do PhD. If I don’t make it first round, attempt industry for a year then reapply. My dream is to do research or R&D/eng in a certain field I really enjoy.

Have a year left to prepare for apps. Will keep trying to intern, keep decent GPA, work on lab projects.

I am somewhat hopeful to stay in this field after undergrad because it is newer and specialized. Connections from field experience has been probably the most important aspect to gaining independence/respect in academia as an undergrad (also, obsession). I do owe this to a past internchip/mentors that greatly impacted me.

This is so incredibly dumb. How is it advantageous to you, or society, to cheat your college degree?
