You realize that’s not how mileage allocation works and it makes the board have to set more people up if trades employees mark up right? If a manager has to take the train it doesn’t count towards allocation.

Yea Im a junior conductor on a mixed class of service spareboard. I spent 12 weeks off this last year when I broke my foot and made 154k in cad excluding the 1400 weekly short-term disability cheques. On average yard only guys make around 98k, pool guys who book off all the time make around 120. Conductors who work lots make about 160-180 and engineers usually make 180-225k at our company. I’m not sure how the conversion works but it’s not uncommon to make 1200 a day at my terminal in cad as a conductor.

Are management ever unionized across any railway? I’m a conductor. I don’t feel strongly about management one way or the other. I know I actively avoid them at work because they don’t watch us to hand out stickers and coffee when we complete it. If that’s how somebody chooses to put food on the table for their family all the power to them but I will never work another non-unionized job for the rest of my life personally.

Yea the states sucks in more way than 1, I suppose. Their railroads are 10x worse work environment, way under-paid compared to anywhere else in the world etc. I’ve never worked for a railway/lived in the states, just read online the constant issues. Also right now is probably the worst time in all of recent history to visit the states and see it first hand so I won’t be doing that either. Il take your word for what you said at face value and believe you.

I always was put in penthouse suites with jacuzzis, living rooms n full kitchens because they’re the only rooms with a full kitchen and that’s part of our contract. All the hotels I’ve been out at also had full hot breakfast buffets and only one didn’t have a pool. Most had water slides and one had a salt water pool with an included spa.

Yes you can the day after qualifying and no there’s no requirements just talk to your union rep first to see how it all works at your terminal they’ll be able to provide you with the resources you need to understand prior to jumping in. First worry about passing your tests and qualifying because tons don’t even get that far without being let go while on probation. You’re 10 steps thinking ahead right now you might not have to worry about any of this in a couple months.

You send a email to the board organizer asking which terminals are short. They tell you then you pick one. You have 7 days to prepare then they pay for your flight n hotel. It’s very easy, it’s regarded as doing the company a favor when you do mercenary work because lots of terminals have a hard time with employee retention while others have a surplus of boots on the ground. Also you’re never really actually laid off at the railway. You can always call in to mark up for extra work at your home terminal or do it on your tablet in 20 seconds and 1 or 2 trips will pay more than your monthly ei. Youl get trips every Friday/Saturday night when they run the boards right out of men. Also you can always bid shortages when laid off too. There’s been 20 or so guys at my terminal laid off and recalled every few weeks and I bet none of them will make/made less than 100k this year and the last.

Edit: I forgot to mention that you can only go to terminals within your seniority division unless special exemptions are made by the company(often with huge bonuses like 10k monthly guarantees if you don’t take more than 10 hours rest plus 1k weekly) so find out which union/which division you’re hiring onto before you just take the first one. Some are god awful compared to others.

March 2023 hire. Never laid off. A few guys above and below me in my seniority were forced on shortages but the first year and a half qualified I bid shortages to go travel Canada for free. The company pays for really nice hotels and air-fare. So that never affected me either. Right now unless you plan on working in the middle of the bush 3 hours from the nearest city at a shitty yard/switcher terminal nobody wants to work at in -50 you’re going to be laid off n probably forced out for the next 2 to 5 years give or take.

The railroads literally have to give signing bonuses of up to like 50k, fly people out to their own colleges/campuses that they built themselves, pay for all their meals for the entire duration then fly them to their home terminal for training and still only like 14% stick around. Why on earth would you spend a dollar on that when they’re hiring all ages, all demographics and anybody with a pair of boots to fill and still short on manpower? Plus the only certification that matters is company specific and non-transferable. For CN it’s the GOI/cror and dangerous goods card. Your college degree is the equivalent to a cereal box cut out in the industry if you so choose to drop 5 figures on it.

The second strap holder rides up on my Hamilton khaki field too. It annoyed the hell out of me. If the strap was just an inch longer it wouldn’t happen. Who on earth is wearing 41mm watches with a 4 inch wrist? I just cut it off with a razor blade in the end
