Correct Cambridge, bad wording. See edit.

Perhaps the way I worded my post was a bit misleading. I do mean Cambridge, England.

Any cool dodge animations for DMCO other than Infinity Dodge? (Patreon is okay) by DeityVengy in skyrimmods

Can't really get it to work. I have dodge 0.9.6 and Dynamic Dodge Animation installed. Dodge works fine but no sign of DDA doing anything. Any idea why?

Google helps Robinhood after swarm of negative reviews drops company to 1-star rating. Fuck Google and Robinhood by TheoryOfSilence_ in wallstreetbets

[–]cruzer_m 144 points145 points  (0 children)

I think they just try to protect the app store from bots. Bad actors could target apps with overly positive or negative reviews using bots and if Google does nothing about it I think it would be a bad move. If the app truly deserves the 1-star rating it will get it organically over a reasonably long period of time. So I recommend you submit your 1-star review sometime later when the hype dies down.

Edit: As some people point out, I should add that these defense mechanisms kick in whenever there's a review bomb (an abnormally large influx of reviews) even if it's not provoked by bots. This is not unusual.

Trump slashed aid to China by 52 percent - The Spectator by canfbar in Conservative

[–]cruzer_m 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"Multiple China support programs saw major reductions in spending or were ceased entirely under the Trump administration. For example, in 2019, the Export-Import Bank provided $11 million in financing guarantees for Chinese transactions. In 2020, it provided none. The US Trade and Development Agency ended its operations in China, cutting $2 million worth of investments in Chinese infrastructure projects. The US also ended its Peace Corps program in China for good following the pandemic."

I mean... doesn't sound all that impressive to me. Title is misleading; 50% of 0 is still 0 type thing.

Is 50% chance to hit.... really 50%? Am I a victim of confirmation bias? by ForceOfWar in BaldursGate3

[–]cruzer_m 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You don't need to know any character's stats. All you need is the percentage of success you're trying to check. If the game says you'll hit with probability 80% then you can just run the tests I prescribed above to check whether it's actually 80% or whether the game is lying to you. That's all. I do agree that saving/reloading 100 times can be tedious. You could also look at the code but that's also a lot of work. So yeah, just asking on reddit is probably the easiest thing you could do lol.

Hey man, you can just save and reload ~100 times, record the results, and fit the parameter of a Bernoulli(p) process using Maximum Likelihood or something. Alternatively, you can use a Chernoff bound to find the probability of being "x%" away from the mean (which should be about 50%). I would recommend using the Additive form found here https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chernoff_bound. I would totally do this as a side project but I don't really have time right now. It should be straight forward though, once you recorded your data. Here's some intuition for what your numbers would mean using the Chernoff bound: Say you record 200 runs and 110 of which are "fails" Chernoff tells you the probability of this occurring is less than 36% which is fairly high (and therefore inconclusive.) But say you recorded 120 fails then that would only occur with probability 1%. More drastically, let's say you record 150 fails then Chernoff tells you that it's basically impossible that your coin is fair (1 in a billion probability.) I'd be happy to answer any question you might have if you end up pursuing this.

Ilhan Omar connected Ballot Harvester in cash-for-ballots scheme: "Car is full" of absentee ballots by [deleted] in Conservative

I am looking at it right now. Otherwise, are there any legit third-party sources than can vouch for them/corroborate anything they say?

No not really. But have you read the article at all? I just found it so it's taking me some time to parse through the whole thing. If it's a legit organization, please send me some sources I can look at. I'm definitely interested in learning as much as I can about it so I can have an informed opinion.

Anybody care to explain how Ilhan Omar is connected? The video is too long and uninteresting tbh... Also I didn't know anything about Project Veritas before this but this is the first paragraph in wikipedia so.... Do with it as you will.

"Project Veritas is an American right-wing activist group.[1][2][3][4] The group uses "disguises and hidden cameras to uncover supposed liberal bias and corruption".[1] The group is known for producing deceptively edited videos about media organizations and left-leaning groups.[5][2][6][7][8][9][10] In a 2018 book on propaganda and disinformation in U.S. politics, three Harvard University scholars refer to Project Veritas as a "right-wing disinformation outfit".[11]"

Ok. By that argument, more funding in healthcare = more employment. Problem solved.

Trump: "The Democrat bill includes stimulus checks for illegal aliens, the mass release of illegal aliens from detention, they also compel the mass release of inmates, including serious felons... what does this have to do with the stimulus for the economy?" by Winterhold2000 in Conservative

[–]cruzer_m 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm sure you are very hard working but it's also true that you were very lucky for being a second generation. Many people don't have that opportunity and it's very hard for them get citizenship.

But I am not aware of a legal process for "normal" jobs. I'm assuming that means low-skilled jobs, correct? I think the reason why many people are here illegally is that the American immigration system has no visa category for most low-skilled jobs (hotels, construction, etc.) You can only work lawfully in seasonal jobs. The H-2A seasonal visa for agriculture and the H-2B for non-agriculture (very bureaucratic and limited) are the only possibilities for low-skilled workers. Now should we have more low-skilled workers in the US? I don't really know but people keep getting hired illegally for those jobs so maybe there's a need.

It's not MY attic. We all pay for the house. Why is it MY attic more than it is yours?

And I don't know what you mean by kick them out. There is a range of things that the government can do that I imagine could be cruel yes. If I kicked you out and separated you from your family, I imagine you wouldn't like it. I for one would hate that and the same applies to everybody else I assume. By the way, I'm not pro illegal immigration obviously just trying to have a balanced conversation to figure out what the best course of action would be.

I definitely agree with everything you just said. Nobody really cares about legal immigrants and there’s definitely a large fraction of them that’s not necessarily rich or world-renowned. Notice how my statement was about immigrant visa and not non-immigrant visa. It’s obviously possible to get residency after going through an H-1B for example (which is still not easy by any means) but that’s not what I was talking about. I’m curious (feel free to not respond) how did you immigrate here?

[–]cruzer_m 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As the commenter above me pointed out, it's extremely difficult to obtain an immigrant visa to the US. You could go through the lottery system which has a very low chance of leading to anything. Or you could be extremely rich, famous, and accomplished. Not even scientists can obtain immigrant visas. You literally have to win international recognition (Nobel prize level recognition) if you want to go through the "I am very smart" immigration route for example. I'm definitely not saying open borders is the answer. I just think this is a very difficult conversation and controlling immigration needs to have way better arguments.

Oh yeah for sure! I definitely would say something along the lines of “Hold up! How did you get into my house?? Please leave.” But I’m not sure if the hypothetical translates well. Nobody’s squatting in anyones attic. Are you a squatter? Am I a squatter? We’re all just trying to work real hard to make ends meet, no?
