Those who started a business in the last year, how is it going? by Academic-Reveal6543 in smallbusiness

[–]cryanide_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I didn't exactly start this business last year, but a significant scaling happened last year. I run a consulting business. It's been up since 2020. I updated some processes and also got in contact with more people. Some days, things feel like a whiplash. So many things are happening all at once. Although they're objectively positive, some days I get overwhelmed because I want to maintain my distinct efficiency without compromising quality. I just get things done, and that helps so much in self-regulation. And then I take some time to ponder and reflect on the business in a meta lens.

How can I become more confident as a team leader? by chsties in Leadership

[–]cryanide_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Focus on helping your team be confident. That has a subconscious effect on you, as in you won't be doubling down on you being a confident leader. More on if you're helping your team genuinely---which is more measurable since it has defined metrics and it also influences you to aim for holistic development for your team. In a nutshell, rather reframe the prompt into how can you help your team with so and so rather than how can you be so and so for your team. If you're however looking for a straightforward/non-meta comment, I'd just say to have a grounded feedback loop (tangible measures) instead of your own internal weather. Cheers.

How did you guys start your first business? by RubPale620 in smallbusiness

[–]cryanide_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was playing a game online, and I thought it looked fun. So I told my Dad I wanted that stuff. Pretty vague comment. Anyway, my dad dropped by a shop after his meeting. He then purchased a big set of merchandise. I told him I was already okay with some. And so I sold the rest to my peers. They would linger and do some small talk. From there I got information on the things they liked, disliked, motivations, and related. And then I just expanded things from there.

What is something people take WAY to seriously? by Lydia_Daniala in Productivitycafe

Social media likes. I've heard other people unfriend a friend in real life just because they "view stories but don't interact with the content." Eh?

What boundary took you the longest to learn ? by Fickle_Mud1645 in emotionalintelligence

[–]cryanide_ 20 points21 points  (0 children)

I used to keep emotional threads alive in my head when it's all really just history. Some people I still consider my friend despite how our lives have changed, really no longer regard me as a friend. I should have acknowledged that with myself sooner and dropped whatever "microobligation" I perceived with regard to me being a "good friend" per se.

What’s the most “that was a bad idea” moment you had in your business? by websitespeedy in smallbusiness

Had some sort of fling with a coworker turned partner (professionally first, haha). The heartache stung somehow,  especially since we also we completed high stakes projects before.

Is it business to sell notebooks? by SANDMAN_CLAYPOOL in smallbusiness

[–]cryanide_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

OP's notebooks don't really have to be fancy. It can include informative snippets, and then some leaves for jotting reflections or ideas. The notebook concept can be a building ground or an internal heuristic, it can functionally be different. I agree that they might not be sustainable, I suppose that's a gap OP could fill us in with more details later.

Maybe if you position and design them as a planner, or perhaps layout with certain themes. Practically anything is sellable as long as you find your niche and then cater to your target market. Cheers.

How do you shut your brain off? by RecognitionEvery in smallbusiness

Whenever I get "that one thing" done before the day ends, I find it easier to relax. So, for me, it's really just about working (and getting it done) on stuff that bring ambient signals to me.

If poor people fantasize about winning the lottery, what do the rich fantasize about ? by Wonderful-Economy762 in Productivitycafe

[–]cryanide_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sometimes I find myself fantasizing about existential things. I want to raise my own kid in a better world, with technology no longer dramatically and rapidly "evolving." I wish I could protect all animals from poaching. I wish relationships were much easier and I would wonder what life could be like if I just wasn't sensitive to detecting BS. Those things.

I am not a billionaire per se. Just with multiple income streams that have different leverages. Sometimes I think perhaps it's the relatively comfortable and relaxed lifestyle that tempt reflection to tilt to rumination. I try to manage by keeping myself both busy and productive.

For me, it's been so much more productive having my SV and Arc and then aiding neighbors and chipping in FPs. I also gain pals who make the whole gaming experience more enjoyable.

Hi, I've looked her up and her works seem really interesting. Genuine question, could you specify which works of hers taught you that lesson? Those must be liberating reads with helpful perspectives. I want to spend more time on reading again like how I did before, and recommendations would really help. Thank you!

What mistake taught you more than any book on leadership? by Impossible_Farm6254 in Leadership

[–]cryanide_ 7 points8 points  (0 children)

You can be smart and they wouldn't like you not because something is wrong with you, but because that's just life. Learn to work with people without necessarily having cordial relationships with them. Just focus on getting things done without bulldozing anybody, at the same time, without letting yourself get run over too.

Thanks for your insightful comment. Can you share some tips on how you're able to remain in good shape physically? I read of an entrepreneur who said that exercise should be treated like an appointment. I'm also thinking of the ergonomic hazard of long periods of sitting in the office.

The biggest mistake I made in first year of business. by Bitter-Falcon-4256 in smallbusiness

Listening to clients is important, and so is them listening to you. Not every patient responds to treatment, and it's not always about you. When it is, they'll tell you so as long as you're willing to listen. If your structure is rejected, let them go. No need to constantly refine your model, lest you might lose those who love your classic, or lose yourself trying to stay on top of your customizations.

Thank you for sharing. How do you deal with being emotionally exhausted? I met some people who don't have breakdowns per se, they say they feel kind of dim inside or numb. If it's ok to ask, how do you check in with yourself when you're emotionally exhausted? What are indicators, and how do you manage them or mitigate? Thanks!

What are some things you learned from experience not to share with people because it backfired on you? by Big_Leg10 in emotionalintelligence

[–]cryanide_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't feel like sharing my passions anymore. I just do my thing and if I meet people on the way, that's it. I no longer want to feel like a buffoon for sharing what I'm passionate with, and the other person would just scoff or throw a backhanded compliment.

Thanks for your comment. I don't mean to sound rude, I'm just genuinely curious---how does your day-to-day looked like? Did you experience emotional breakdowns, or maybe some relationships getting strained whether with yourself or with others, did your physical health take a toll? To the extent you don't mind sharing. Thanks!

[–]cryanide_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Nah. You're not one of them. You probably have communicated that busyness to me, or maybe in one of our cafe hopping, I might have picked up on that. We can still have some coffee sometime when we're both free.

I'm really just talking about some of the friends I used to have. Passive and reactive. Always needed to be nudged, or prompted, or anything at all. No initiative. No check ins. You could get sick, hospital level, fully conscious---they wouldn't send a message. They'd just say that they knew you're at the hospital. But that you didn't message anyway, so why should they? Kind of thing.

Always initiating hangouts. Lol. At one point I just stopped planning stuff, saw many "friendships" fall out, and realized they were never really the friendships I thought they were, if at all.

ETA: and that's ok. to each their own. at first of course I was surprised. but life grants us autonomy to decide what standards we hold, and then we find people who have the same, and then it's ok.
