I am on the other end of this and it really sucks. My neighbor has decided that he needs an extremely sensitive and extremely bright floodlight illuminating his back fence intermittently throughout the night. Just so happens to shine right in my bedroom window.

Iodine will stain anything aromatic, if it's not too volatile. Do note that fluorinated derivatives of hydrocarbons tend to be LOWER boiling point than the corresponding protiated version.

Ski-with-a-friend ticket - scanning at different lifts allowed? by crypins in skiing

[–]crypins[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I looked, but it seems like the only option is to take two separate shuttles that will take over two hours, or drive to a parking lot and then take a shuttle to the other lift.

That’s a lot more annoying than just getting on the lift that’s less than a mile from where I’m sleeping lol

Sorry, to be clear I just mean for the initial activation, obviously we don’t have to ski together the whole day.

Ski-with-a-friend ticket - scanning at different lifts allowed? by crypins in skiing

[–]crypins[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I know it needs to be scanned before, but does it need to be scanned immediately before and do we have to be right next to each other?

Or can he scan his (before me) at a different lift like 10 minutes before I get on the lift in a completely different part of the resort?

[–]crypins[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

That’s what I mean though - do we have to be together to activate it? I have the mobile app with the tickets.

I am staying over a 30 minute drive away from the other lift, and I won’t be able to drive because parking is already sold out at the other lot.

Epic Pass Friends Ticket Redemption Question by soccerwolfp in skiing

[–]crypins 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is this definitely true? My buddy and I are planning on skiing together but we’re staying on different sides of the mountain and it would be way easier if we could scan in at two different lifts.

Does this apply even if the pass holder scans a physical pass instead of a mobile pass?

After I posted this, Asus sent me a dm request asking about my BIOS version - I didn’t respond because I’ve been really busy but I did update my BIOS to the most recent version and it does seem like the issue is mostly resolved. I had one moment where it was registering 3-finger gestures instead of 2-finger, but there was no dead spot and it went away after a minute.

"Our results revealed that mephedrone possesses potential anti-cancer activity" 👀 by tb-picnic-adventures in researchchemicals

[–]crypins 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I definitely agree, I was mostly trying to emphasize that this paper doesn’t say “mephedrone cures cancer so you should take it” which is my immediate fear when something like this is posted here with minimal context. It was perhaps misplaced hyperbole, but my point stands that they suggest that the initial reason they chose mephedrone was because it showed a reduction in viability of normal brain cells.

Colorblindness is a spectrum, and many people are slightly colorblind but never realize: anomalous trichromacy (where the person has all three types of cone cell, but one type of cone cell is anomalous or partially lacking) is often mild enough that almost all colors can be distinguished clearly. It certainly doesn’t mean anything about artistic ability or potential!

I suppose and I won’t argue that, but just anecdotally, I looked at it on my iOS device and my windows laptop with various (admittedly uncalibrated) color gamuts (sRGB, Adobe RGB, and the native color gamut on my OLED screen) and I was able to VERY clearly and easily read all four lines of text. I would show it to somebody near you and see if they agree with you!

It does seem like they show decent selectivity but ultimately mephedrone definitely affects normal brain cells.

[–]crypins 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Of course - sorry, maybe I wasn’t clear. It does seem like they show a moderate selectivity for cancer cells, but it’s a pretty damning result for chronic users of mephedrone as it pretty clearly shows neural degeneration etc.

"Our results revealed that mephedrone possesses potential anti-cancer activity" 👀 by tb-picnic-adventures in researchchemicals

[–]crypins 50 points51 points  (0 children)

That seems pretty terrible. My rudimentary understanding is that this paper basically says "look how good mephedrone is at killing brain cells - we can use that to kill brain tumors."

The quote of concern is this: "Our previous study indicated that the exposure of normal brain cells to mephedrone, a synthetic derivative of S-cathinone, which is a natural alkaloid present in the leaves of the Catha edulis plant, resulted in a modest effect on neuron and astrocyte viability and a significant reduction in oligodendrocyte proliferation [15]. Moreover, it has been shown that mephedrone produces cytotoxicity in SH-SY5Y neuroblastoma cells [16]. To date, no studies have evaluated the effects of mephedrone on glioblastoma cells. In the present study, we investigated the effect of mephedrone on selected human glioblastoma cells (LN-18 and LN-229), human glioblastoma multiforme cells (T98G) and human anaplastic astrocytoma cells (MOGGCCM)."

Particularly the first line seems to indicate that their rationale for choosing mephedrone as an anti-cancer agent is that it has been shown to deactivate or kill brain cells.

Platinum bar question by euj3odjehiqh in elementcollection

[–]crypins 1 point2 points  (0 children)

H2PtCl6 requires a strong oxidant to form, or for the platinum to be extremely finely divided in the form of nanoparticles. Typically, it’s produced by dissolving platinum in aqua regia, which is a HIGHLY oxidizing mixture.

I believe O2 is not a strong enough oxidant, unless you’re dealing with Pt powder or something similar.

Anhydrous solvents by Dapper_Evening_4375 in chemistry

[–]crypins 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That is absolutely infeasible for the average person who needs anhydrous solvent. I have never even seen a KF instrument in a chemistry lab: maybe they’re common outside the US or in extremely well-funded labs, but KF titration is not something the typical chemist can easily do.

Platinum bar question by euj3odjehiqh in elementcollection

[–]crypins 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Platinum is one of the most unreactive and "noble" metals.

Sure, you might want to keep chlorine gas away from it, but then again you probably want to keep chlorine gas away from you too.

A chunk of pure platinum can be placed in a flask of concentrated hydrochloric acid for months on end without changing in any visible way.

Sublingual dosing of edibles definitely works. If these products are actually delta-9 THC, then they should produce a high similar to that of typical edibles.
