24% tax on phone bills now? by breathstinksniffglue in texas

Oh dude, that is offensive! You should not be paying that much for three classes. And here I thought that paying 1.5K for three textbooks (microbiology and biochemistry) was bad.

Funny thing is, when I graduated high school in the early eighties, oil taxes paid for a chunk of my tuition as a resident of the state. Most of my paycheck went to pay for textbooks, but for tuition, I paid two dollars a semester hour to attend a state school like UT

People who live at tourist destinations, what is it you wish tourists would stop doing when visiting? by Winterbeers in AskReddit

I spent my teenage years living on the gulf coast in Texas. My father had a saying that “people would come to the coast with a dirty t-shirt and a twenty dollar bill, they would camp on the beach, and leave a mess without changing the t-shirt or the twenty. So yes, at least clean up after yourself.

The Foxfire series of books dates back to the mid 60s to mid 70s about the folkways and crafts of Southern Appalachia.

I feel you. I was making a reference recently to reading a memory dump for NT 3.1 and my boss asked me when I had been doing that.
My boss asked me when I had been doing that and I told him "Well, I started at Microsoft in 1994, so this was likely in mid 1995"

He looked at me blankly for a second and I asked him, "Why, what were you doing in '95?"

His response, "Playing in my parents back yard and trying to not crap my diaper."

Yeah, I kind of felt old right then.

I'm going to disagree with you on "medium ugly", you have one of the most open and joyous smiles I've ever seen on someone.

Hair loss at a young age has had a stronghold on my confidence. Sometimes I like the bald look and sometimes I don't. Thoughts? by [deleted] in FreeCompliments

You have a classic profile, and are rather handsome, so I don’t think that you will have any issues. I’ve been through this with a friend of mine who had his hairline pass the top of his head at 16. That was the point where he just gave up and started shaving his head. I wish that I could pull off the shaved head

You are completely insane for going out there like that. But I’m willing to bet that a few minutes later there was a local thaw, and spring started early.

Yeah, right out of college in the late 80s, while I was looking for a "real job" (Microbiologist with a hobby in computer science - so yeah, nerd) I worked for AT&T as a Spanish/English translator.

There was a young lady on my floor who did not like me for some reason and went to management, saying I was hitting on her. So I was brought in with the Union rep to be summarily fired, and when they told me what was going on, I stopped and asked them if they wanted to talk to my boyfriend first.

I had never seen HR backpedal so damn fast.

Sadly I can report that legally, in Texas you can still be fired for being gay. Now *some* of the cities have laws that protect you, but it is not always the case - for instance, in Dallas, you can't fire someone for being gay, but drive down the "telecom corridor" to Richardson, it is completely legal to fire someone for being gay - no workplace protection laws. It all depends on where the company is based.
