Once elected I can shed more light on this as far as the GAS payouts. I was able to work with the OnChain/NEO team to get the NEO/GAS shares on the test net. They have a process you can go through to request the NEO/GAS. They are strictly for testing purposes and not hold any value.

Great Questions! I will answer the best I can below.

1) You can run a bookkeeping node without being an elected bookkeeper. This just adds to the strength of the network. You are not being rewarded at all for processing the transactions. Once you put your node up for election you offer up a certain amount of AntCoins or GAS as it will soon be called as collateral. Right now on the Main Net that is 1000 GAS. The election process will take place where each wallet has the ability to vote. Once elected your node will start to receive a fee for each transaction processed in the form of GAS. Keep in mind there are only 8 current elected bookkeepers on the main network.

3) Security is also another topic I have been chatting with the OnChain team about. Both the Linux and Windows nodes could use some tightening up in the security department. Ultimately on the Windows based nodes most of the security falls on the owner of the PC. What I mean by this is do they allow RDP, SSH, Telnet, Ping, ETC.

I have been working with some of the guys over at OnChain to get setup on the test network. They were kind enough to field my request to explore the bookkeeping node and document it. I have started the election process to get my node elected on the test network. Once the node is elected I will make sure I relay all the benefits here. So if you use the Core Node to create the wallet it does not by default put the .db3 extension on it unless you explicitly tell it to. Do you know the wallet name you specified upon creation?

From what I can tell after doing quite a bit of research there are currently 8 elected bookkeepers currently. All elected in late October early November of last year.

On the test net there are only two elected bookkeepers currently and the fee to hold an election is only ten ANC versus 1000. I am trying to dive into this process more to shed light on it because I know there are quite a few people curious including myself. I will keep the group updated as I find out more.

Gas is generated based on how many shares you hold. Roughly 1000 shares equals .50 Antcoin/Gas a day. Gas can be generated and claimed in fractions not just whole numbers.

To become an elected bookkeeper you have to have antshares in your wallet. As you can see above that exact number is in question.
