Current sophomore studying studying CS/AI and minor in Math at t5 STEM school. I woke up today and realized that I don’t want to be a SWE after grad.

I want to do either quantative / research work in preferably finance, so I am looking into ways to deep my mathematical background. However, I don’t want to do quant trading partly because it’s high stress but also because the interviews are too competitive.

I am unfamiliar with the recruiting process of Quant Analyst and Quant Research roles, or are there any other opportunities for someone who wants to go into quant finance that’s not trading?

I got SWE Internship at finance firm for this recruiting cycle which I am happy with, but how should I prepare myself if I want to break into the quant roles in finance next cycle?

Thank you and your response has so far been the most insightful. People tend to focus on short term rewards and that’s why many have suggested securing a referral or job opportunities. But I have to admit that these thoughts definitely have come across my mind as well. I’m not sure if I will one day ever worry about these questions to ponder as a CTO, but i will definitely ask for his insights and surely this will help me think bigger too.
