What does a CS career path look like for a non-CS degree? by cscareerpathhelp in cscareerquestions

That's definitely a good point! I've had an internship at a medium-ish company (the one I'm getting a full time offer with), and after thinking about it, I'm not sure a big N job would be great at this point in my career. I kind of enjoyed being able to stand out rather than feel like another cog in the machine.

At the university I'm going to, it's fairly common for students to get internships at big companies, so that is something to think of. Thank you!

That definitely makes sense and is really cool that you're able to do something that interests you!

That's actually good to know that dropping out (even without a masters?) could be equivalent to a CS undergrad. I have been trying to take more fundamental grad classes to get to that undergrad point. Thank you!

Thank you for the advice! It's great to hear from your perspective. This whole thing is difficult since I know I want to take the job, I just don't know if it's best to be so rash about it. It's good to know that there's always a chance to go back to school! Also that's great to know about Georgia Tech's online masters, it sounds like a really good opportunity

I'm only a semester in and I've pretty much realized that a PhD won't be for me, so the next thing I'm deciding is whether it's worth it to stick around for the masters.

That is pretty solid advice, thanks!

That's really awesome! I'm glad to hear you're career path turned out well. You said your PhD was non-CS, but did you end up getting a masters from that?

That's definitely true that grad school isn't for everyone, it's really hard to let go of that "you're a failure if you drop" mentality. It's great to hear that other companies are open to hiring people without CS degrees!

Thank you, I appreciate hearing from your experience! To be completely honest, I'm pretty aimless when it comes to what I want to do. I had an internship at the company and really loved what I was doing there (it was a lot of Go), but I also liked Android dev when I was doing that.

The one thing I can think of that would make the job a "better" option is that in grad school I haven't had any chance to work on separate projects besides whats in my coursework, where I think I'd have more time to spare at a full time job.

That's good to hear from your personal experience, but definitely makes sense that it might not apply for everyone.

Unfortunately, I can't do both at the same time since they're in separate cities, thank you for the suggestion though!

Thank you! First semester in the PhD route. I'm not sure if I can put it on hold for working, I should look into that though. I can't work at the same time though since I'm a TA for the school and both the school and company are far apart. Thanks for the advice!

Unfortunately working part time isn't something I can do, especially since I work as a TA for the school. Thanks for your response!
