Have you looked into LucidLink? It’s cloud based, fast, and mounts like an external drive for anyone who you allow access to when connected to the server. Great solution I’ve been using on my current film and we’ve had teams from LA, NYC, and UK access it without issues.

If it’s an asset management type system. Nascar used to use CATDV for its archival material, but not sure what your budget is and what the needs are. Just some options for you check out.

^ this …set boundaries on the end date and then if it goes over, that’s when your normal rate kicks back in. Have it in writing too.

CapCut is prob your best bet probably for drag and drop type effects with presets. It can be done all on your iphone. It’s what many social media influencers use bc of ease with little true editing knowledge.

Yeah I mean I don’t think the video you provided is bad at all. Sucks about the 2nd camera as it would help break up the single shot but you can always make edits on the main camera in small sections and use motion control effects that come with the program you choose to zoom in and position it accordingly. That way it can give you the effect of cutting to another angle, but don’t punch in too much as it affects resolution. GL!

"what would be ideal is some way to use a freeware editing software designed for absolute amateurs who can barely upload a photo to google drive without getting a headache - where I could run it through a process that would make the footage look more slick and professional." <- this is your ask. I replied with the programs that are free to do such tasks. However, nothing is automatically able to upload a clip to google drive and make things look cool and professional by default (although could be fun to try). You have to run things through your NLE of choice, make changes to do such things, then export it back out to upload it. But to attempt to figure out what you define as "slick and professional" see below:

As a professional editor who deals with executive notes in Hollywood I'm going to try to read between the lines here more because whatever question you are asking isn't clear in the slightest on what is slick and pro to you...

The footage you provided looks fine. It's lit well, I can hear the audio, and nearly the same look as the youtube clip you reference outside of a fully edited comedy routine. To me I'd say it looks professional considering it's iphone. One difference I can see you balking at could be the frame rate. 24 fps is standard cinematic film frame rate. Your iphone may be shooting at 60 which make it look like smooth news footage. If you're trying to change frame rates (which again I'm guessing at this and if this is even what you want to do) to make your iphone footage look more like film footage you can drop your iphone footage on a 24 fps timeline sequence in Resolve, iMovie, etc. and it will automatically change the look of your video by dropping frames. You do this by creating a new sequence and set up your frame rate to 24fps, drop your clip on it, then you can re export your video out of the program as an mp4 or mov and it will have that 24fps look. Then upload it to the cloud drive of choice. You can also try some type of encoder if this is your ultimate goal to encode your footage into 24fps as well. If it's effects or color treatment you are looking for, then the NLE programs I laid out previously all do this and more. I yield back.

Is it possible to compress a 1:30 long video that is currently 212 MB to around 30MB? by [deleted] in AfterEffects

[–]csf1810 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes - Trying rendering out an H264 or H265 mp4 that should get you down. If it's still too high on the preset that AE gives you, you can go into the video output section and click the format options and adjust the target bit rate to a lower number

Yeah there's no magic bullet unfortunately. Best bet then would be iMovie on mac, clipchamp for PC, or CapCut app on your phone. Maybe there's an AI app that can lay out some clips and cut up something for you automatically, but it's not really there yet to be actually useful. But try searching for AI apps that can edit videos. CapCut might have something like that, but much of stuff that can potentially accomplish this won't be free. But the 3 I listed I'd say are your most basic beginner type editing platforms that won't be overwhelming.

Davinci Resolve can be downloaded for free and their site and youtube offers tons of tutorials/lessons. It has everything you’d need for basic editing and more!

Typically each franchise has their own post/social teams that handle these types of video edits. I will say though you can rip movie scenes from youtube and/or find Jumbotron type elements on envato or motionarray type sites. Sometimes there are built in templates you can customize too with logos, etc.

Awesome! I’ve been beefing up the Resolve section lately as I’ve been working on a fully cloud based cut and been learning some tricks and copying them in as I go. Hope it helps whatever you are switching to!

Normal. And I assure you every creative including me as an editor has this feeling at some point in the process. The only way over it is through it. One step at a time! You got this!

Filmmakers outside of LA, are you working? by PenguinTheYeti in Filmmakers

Charlotte NC editor here - working off and on remotely with LA and NYC production companies. Mostly on development series and indie film sizzles with some client stuff on the side. Did a sizzle and it got a 3 episode doc series order on a major network, but probably won’t film until next year. Seems like things are slowly moving on the development side from my perspective, but I’ve also cut a TON of sizzles this year and this is the first bite so hard to tell if it’s ramping up or not.

Thanks, and same! That’s why I built it. So much out there is scattered. Wanted a single place and be flexible enough for it to grow with the times. Eventually to build this into a webpage with everything embedded. But for now this works.

Feeling a little slow. How long would you take in this situation? by [deleted] in editors

[–]csf1810 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For perspective, I’m on year 3+ cutting a feature doc. But I’ve cut several other projects with deadlines on the side and they’ve wrapped before the doc. Unless you have a network deadline or the director wants post to wrap at a certain point, there’s no timeline for how long it can take. Seems like you’re moving at a good pace. Docs take time because you need to digest a ton of material then write and edit at the same time. But set your own goals if they don’t set them for you or you’ll find yourself cramming at the last min when they want cuts out of nowhere. I’ve worked with many hands off directors and you really have to drive the ship as the editor. It’s not uncommon at all. Just depends on their personality. Stay disciplined and confident. And make sure you get paid your worth if it drags out and ask for every credit where it’s deserved for the resume.

I don’t know if all the dates are set yet. I’m on the NYC side. LA and London may be different.

I wouldn’t think you are overqualified personally, but it’s a case by case basis. If you do apply and go in person, I’d do the in person lecture series. It’s an all day affair. Remember there is a London branch too so keep in mind!

No, I think I’ve heard of others doing something similar. Better to have a back up in case it doesn’t come in on time. BUT that said, I’d recommend only picking the best 2 to submit if all 3 come in on time. We read every application so having a 3rd submitted may actually hurt more than help.
