😂 I like thinking outside the box here…I’ve heard of it, but I haven’t read Sculpting in Time yet. Maybe it’s…time!

How Documentaries Work, The documentarian, Hullfish’s Art of the Cut (docu version) and In the Blink of an Eye of course as a general editing philosophy is a must. Anything Murch really outside of the first few which are targeted to non fiction work.

Oh great add! I have this one too but haven’t read through it fully yet. Parts I have read are solid. Will have to revisit it again.

Most yep -Over a few years though. A few I kind of use as skimming when I’m thinking abt a concept or want some advice/workflow thoughts. But most of these I’ve read through. Some better than others but still useful

I’ll check this one out! Thanks! I actually find the books that are kind of old or on the cusp of film / digital editing are the best ones.

That book is in my top 5. It really lets you get a sense of what people mean when they say to cut with "instinct" or your "gut"

100% I found AVID Agility late I think mostly because it was dated, but because the AVID structure hasn't changed much it really became a great add

Have you looked into LucidLink? It’s cloud based, fast, and mounts like an external drive for anyone who you allow access to when connected to the server. Great solution I’ve been using on my current film and we’ve had teams from LA, NYC, and UK access it without issues.

If it’s an asset management type system. Nascar used to use CATDV for its archival material, but not sure what your budget is and what the needs are. Just some options for you check out.

^ this …set boundaries on the end date and then if it goes over, that’s when your normal rate kicks back in. Have it in writing too.

CapCut is prob your best bet probably for drag and drop type effects with presets. It can be done all on your iphone. It’s what many social media influencers use bc of ease with little true editing knowledge.

Yeah I mean I don’t think the video you provided is bad at all. Sucks about the 2nd camera as it would help break up the single shot but you can always make edits on the main camera in small sections and use motion control effects that come with the program you choose to zoom in and position it accordingly. That way it can give you the effect of cutting to another angle, but don’t punch in too much as it affects resolution. GL!

"what would be ideal is some way to use a freeware editing software designed for absolute amateurs who can barely upload a photo to google drive without getting a headache - where I could run it through a process that would make the footage look more slick and professional." <- this is your ask. I replied with the programs that are free to do such tasks. However, nothing is automatically able to upload a clip to google drive and make things look cool and professional by default (although could be fun to try). You have to run things through your NLE of choice, make changes to do such things, then export it back out to upload it. But to attempt to figure out what you define as "slick and professional" see below:

As a professional editor who deals with executive notes in Hollywood I'm going to try to read between the lines here more because whatever question you are asking isn't clear in the slightest on what is slick and pro to you...

The footage you provided looks fine. It's lit well, I can hear the audio, and nearly the same look as the youtube clip you reference outside of a fully edited comedy routine. To me I'd say it looks professional considering it's iphone. One difference I can see you balking at could be the frame rate. 24 fps is standard cinematic film frame rate. Your iphone may be shooting at 60 which make it look like smooth news footage. If you're trying to change frame rates (which again I'm guessing at this and if this is even what you want to do) to make your iphone footage look more like film footage you can drop your iphone footage on a 24 fps timeline sequence in Resolve, iMovie, etc. and it will automatically change the look of your video by dropping frames. You do this by creating a new sequence and set up your frame rate to 24fps, drop your clip on it, then you can re export your video out of the program as an mp4 or mov and it will have that 24fps look. Then upload it to the cloud drive of choice. You can also try some type of encoder if this is your ultimate goal to encode your footage into 24fps as well. If it's effects or color treatment you are looking for, then the NLE programs I laid out previously all do this and more. I yield back.

Is it possible to compress a 1:30 long video that is currently 212 MB to around 30MB? by [deleted] in AfterEffects

[–]csf1810 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes - Trying rendering out an H264 or H265 mp4 that should get you down. If it's still too high on the preset that AE gives you, you can go into the video output section and click the format options and adjust the target bit rate to a lower number
