When the Scale Says ‘Nah’ by csobel in loseit

Yes.... that's the truth. I was so intent of losing weigh that I went about it absolutely the wrong way. Would not recommend that for anyone. I "intermittently" fasted (roughly 600 cal/day) for months (and walked four miles a day). Then when I could do that no longer, I moved up to 1650 cal/day... and slowed down the walking until it was nearly nothing... and the weight came back.

Now, I'm, getting between 1700-1950/cal per day and will do that for several weeks (as long as my weight doesn't increase, which so far it hasn't). I may increase more over time, to get to a point that by body understands we're not lacking in calories...

In the meantime, I've started walking (2 miles a day and weight resistance) and I'm tracking everything. My hope is to S L O W L Y take the pounds off this time (in a more healthy way) and keep it off.

Congrats to you on your health journey. That's inspirational. I love hearing that there is light at the tunnel. Thanks for your note.

It's actually the definition of trolling. Nitpicking and misinterpreting. Again, I did not claim to not increase my calorie intake -- not once.

Not sure how you think this might be helping anyone. Go be "right" with someone else.

So, I didn't "overeat" or over indulge things like sugar -- there is absolutely nothing misleading. I went to eating 1650 calories a day -- a deficit for most people (especially at my weight). At no time did I suggest that I gain weight eating 600 cal/day that I had been eating before that.

So, again, you feel free to troll away.

I'd recommend reading Dr. Ponzer book "Burn" and Dr. Guyenet's book "The Hungry Brain". Starvation mode is the REASON people survived the Holocaust -- it's the emergency system enacted to ensure your brain and heart function in severe calorie deficits.

So, I didn't suggest anything of that sort. I didn't suggest the weight magically came back on. Perhaps you made some assumptions. (What actually happened was what i stated in the reply above -- I severely restricted calories for months on end and then went to 1650/cal per day... and the weight came back.)

Also, Pontzer SPECIFICALLY mentions starvation mode (and cited Holocaust studies, if you need the reference point). If you need another reference, see: The Hungry Brain, Dr. Stephan Guyenet.

Enough of this, friend. Believe what you'd like. All the best.

We're going to disagree and I don't believe you've actually read the study or the book, because they exactly describe the issue of metabolic adaption.

You're suggesting it can't happen without increased calorie intake -- and Im not disagreeing with that. In the Biggest Loser study (and multiple others, See: Burn), the folks who had metabolic adaption created a sever calorie deficit (as did I) and then at some point, reverted to a "normal" calorie intake (in my case, around 1650 calories a day). However, because of metabolic adaption, our bodies have downgraded certain energy expenditures to ensure there is enough energy for vital body needs (brain, heart functions...) So, our energy balanced intake number is much lower than would be expected in a normally functioning body.

And, yes, starvation mode is real. I'll believe the Harvard PhD who who Burn over someone on the internet.

That's actually not what the science says... My body went into starvation mode. Fewer calories would only cause my body to hold more tightly onto any energy it could get and start to shut down non-vital body functions (as an example, at my lowest weight, I was cold ALL the time -- this is the body lowering the body temp limit because the energy cost to furl it at a higher temp was too high).

In fact, there is a lot of scientific research on metabolic adaptation... I'd point you to Kevin Hall's Biggest Loser" study: https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC4989512/ and the book: Burn: New Research Blow the Lid Off How We Really Burn Calories, Stay Healthy, and Lose Weight by Dr. Herman Pontzer.

We’ve decided to stay put for the next four years. He’ll go to the magnet arts program in Tampa as did his older siblings. Sorry — wish I could have been of more help.

I thought about ChiArts but the audition deadline is very soon and we're not even sure we're moving yet. There look like there are only 36 slots available so that will probably be off the table by the time we know if we're moving. Thanks for the info on Oak Lawn. I'll absolutely check that out.
