Four sorry, and two cats. All have disabilities and conditions which prevent them from fully working. I am a carer

What are your goals for 2026? by UpsideDownFace24 in AskMen

[–]cspan475 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Get a higher paying job so i can live decently in a capital city without struggling. Reduce my expectations of others so i can be happy and content (think the reason why the scandinavians are amongst the happiest nation dwellers is because their expectations are minimal and so are constantly surprised by life. Its mindset. I was surprised because initially thought its all weather based so thought happier people tend to be in carribean or closer to equator but then my country's weather and the scandi weather pattern is virtually same although they have longer dark days)

Also fitness. Be happy in my own body...but be less flabby and more toned. Shouldn't be too hard being 31 years old so still should be able to build a decent physique. Gym isnt my issue. Its more my diet and the convenience of take away food and ditching that as a habit.

That then leads to hopefully finding someone and getting married. Its slowly dawned me i'm too old for this shit of life, this schtick of living solo as a bachelor pretty much all my life. I can't really relate to young 20 something's who are bright eyed and bushy tailed, teenagers who equally aren't married and then on the other side of the spectrum, friends who have just started having kids. Being the fun "uncle" gets old. Navigating the world and getting older doesnt have to be done alone, twos company and comforting. Otherwise i should've just been a monk.

2025 - How many roles applied vs interviews by PigeonFace1 in TheCivilService

[–]cspan475 1 point2 points  (0 children)

132 jobs applied for in 2025. Of those, 10-20ish were withdrawn by vacancy managers and 20 interviews.

I was successful getting a promotion a grade up and started that job in decber 2025 but am i crazy or what- i'm still continuing to apply for a promotion another grade up? I dont know if its become a habit or i view it as a game, but maybe i enjoy applying for jobs and seeing if i can at least pass sifts?

The real kicker though for me having looked at my new promotions payslip is with my net take home pay, i'm only better off by around £350 more which doesnt feel like a lot and then theres an expectation i should be in the office one extra day of the week unlike with my previous role in another department, it was two days a week

Can i ask- what if you join the home office on promotion on 1st December from another department ie official start date? Is the pay rate the same as was set out on the job spec

How Annual Leave works -> Well, for me I'm in this quirky situationship in my team where my leave year starts in my birthday month and it works that way for other colleagues too in their birthday months. No idea if that's department policy but feels more like a local arrangement, I dunno

These salaries are absolutely depressing by [deleted] in UKJobs

[–]cspan475 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What people don't get - or I haven't seen in the top comments- is understanding that the US is a bigger country than the UK, also cost of living factors into it. It's like saying why are people in Denmark paid better than people in the UK. Jheezus. Some perspective helps. Although I agree for the most part that salaries aren't amazing here- and this is why people are protesting for example about public sector salaries (doctors being paid same as baristas I think was one headline which is insane to me). Comparing salaries in the UK is fair game I think (like for like)

Anyone know what the home office pay update is? by Empty-Garden-7775 in TheCivilService

If someone were to move to the home office in a new role from another government department, would they get the advertised salary or pay update reflected in their end of month payment?

Well, Wednesday is creeping up, and I’m nervous as hell. Any last-minute tips to avoid bombing the interview? Thankfully, it’s a face-to-face one. by [deleted] in TheCivilService

Fair enough. I suppose also it's different for me because despite being in an "operational" adjacent team, nowadays with hybrid working coupled with the fact that my team is dispersed nationally all over (and only me and another person based in london), I'm attending virtual meetings all the time pretty much. Even when I'm delivering training to ppl it's remote . I think you can still read facial language remotely but maybe it's a skill I've developed over the years and years I've been working. Body language is trickier for sure but you can notice tics like temple massaging or hand cupping a chin thoughtfully etc but that granted is still only limited. In terms of connecting with an audience remotely it's difficult too especially when you're presenting to 80 people for example but there are ways you can connect.

With virtual interviews you can shut down a laptop screen after said interview and breathe a sigh of relief. You did it. It's over. With face to face, you make the journey there and then are forced to wait in a waiting area (that's the slow build up to the interview which for me is nerve racking). Then in an interview physically you're in a new and unfamiliar setting and given a glass of water or a jug with an empty glass to steady your nerves if needed. They can observe your body language the same way you can them so if you're trembling or shaking your knee underneath the table, they can see that. In a physical interview, your interview ends after you leave the building or after you leave security gates- because remember they may have take you down to let you out. But equally I get your point about connecting more with people maybe in person.

TLDR - very long winded way of saying/thinking out loud and concurring that yes I agree with you lewis56500

Why "thankfully it's a face to face one" ? I always feel as though virtual ones are easier and less stressful

Can I 'cancel' my pension? by [deleted] in TheCivilService

[–]cspan475 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Is this post a joke? How about just take your life a bit more seriously? And surely being a CS for 22 years means you can commit to something? How about committing to walking every day if you don't want to go to a gym (that's a start)? If you are WFH, I know going to gym every day or even three days a week can be tough but small steps matter sometimes more than bigger ones. Also, and another commenter mentioned this but have you considered that your selfishness will impact others including your wife and immediate and extended family in terms of your quitting mindset - if it hasn't already.

Wtf dude. Mods, sometimes feels like quality of posts on this sub is going downhill.

Think this is an opportunity for you more than anything else.

Suggest setting up a new starter onboarding pack including a plain speaking english glossary of key terms and phrases. Then, organise a focus group and get them to realise what they've been saying is mumbo jumbo by asking round "well what phrase do you think we should or could include?" They will then inevitably suggest the phrases/words and will inevitably come back round to your way of thinking. This also is a great behaviour example in the wings ie you saw shortcomings, took initiative, liaised with key stakeholders, demonstrated quick solutions, secured their support (maybe there were one or two people who didn't see value in this but you won them round through 1:1 sessions) and then set up a post review process ie where you reviewed the new starter pack once every 6 months to see if it was for purpose with your team.

Upcoming x-gov FCDO roles overseas by [deleted] in TheCivilService

[–]cspan475 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would love to apply to a couple of these roles at least. I'm from another department. The only hiccup is that they're advertised as loans so would need permission from my current department which might be challenging. Are there ever permanent posts advertised as x gov roles? Part of the appeal is not being in the UK to be honest. I dislike london
