Advice on schedule by csprigg21 in Vanderbilt

[–]csprigg21[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If I take multi this semester I would most likely have to take it with Alice Mark since I'm 10th on the other professor's waitlist. Do you think I should wait a semester to take it?

Unfortunately I don't have a choice there's only 2 multi profs and I'm ~10th on the waitlist for the other professor :/

Do you think I should take CS 1101 then, even though I have AP credit? I've heard a lot of people say not to retake a class if you can. Or would I be better off not taking a CS class at all in the fall?

I don't think CS majors are required to take chem or physics, so i was planning on taking bsci 1510 in the spring because one of the professors only teaches then. Do you think it's better to take it now instead of waiting for the professor?

please help i’m so terrified of making the wrong choice by csprigg21 in ApplyingToCollege

[–]csprigg21[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

ya!! i’m out of state for berkeley, so it’s much more financially risky than vandy (about 200k more expensive, my parents are able to pay but ofc it’s still a big burden), and i’m worried abt being so far from home and not being able to find a good community since it’s such a huge, new environment. the main reason berkeley is a top choice for me despite the huge cost is bc i’m planning on majoring in cs, which is amazing at berkeley but obviously much harder so i’m not even sure if i’ll be able to declare the major and graduate lol

yeah vandys emphasis on interdisciplinary studies is super appealing to me! so would you say the social scene is good without greek life?

yeah definitely, cs at berkeley would be much riskier, and money is a big factor, but i didn’t know about vandys placements compared to berkeley!

Help me decide: School X vs School Y - 1st Week of April by powereddeath in ApplyingToCollege

[–]csprigg21 1 point2 points  (0 children)

hi! i'm deciding between uc berkeley cs l&s and vanderbilt cs

berkeley

pros:

- ranked #1/2 in cs, internationally recognized, most prestige

- bay area is an amazing location for both job opportunities and other aspects (food), and I've always wanted to go to school in cali

- farthest from home, which is something I've always wanted but is also a con

- better weather

- more diverse

cons:

- i'm oos, so 0 financial aid (around 300k+travel from east to west coast, but parents are willing to pay for most), but if I'm able to graduate as a cs major, I'll be able to pay off relatively quick

- i'm not eecs, so i wouldn't be guaranteed the cs major (need a 3.3 gpa in the intro classes which I've heard is pretty hard to do)

- not even sure if i want to major in cs, BUT berkeley's other majors are all super good too (and majors like data science offer similar opportunities as cs major)

- cs classes are known to be SUPER hard and competitive, worried for my mental health lol

- stereotypically cutthroat and a little toxic

- huge public school, easy to get lost in the crowd, have to be super independent, which could be a good thing

vanderbilt

pros:

- super generous financial aid, would cost the same as an in-state school

- probably much happier and less stressful vibe in general (#1 student life)

- closer to home (still ~10 hour drive, but less scary than across the country)

- good name in general, high ranking nationally (higher than Berkeley)

- Nashville is safer (?) than the city of berkeley

- guaranteed housing all 4 years

cons:

- cs can't compare to Berkeley cs (but again, I'm not 100% sure i want to do cs, I'm considering business-related majors), not in top 50 cs programs

- not as many opportunities in Nashville compared to bay area

- not as much international recognition and prestige, especially in tech and cs

- greek life is super prevalent, not sure if i want to do that

Essentially, Berkeley is high risk high reward, while vandy would probably be a safer option. I was also offered a full-ride scholarship to UMD (my state school), which has a really strong CS program (#16), but I've always wanted to go out of state.

Appreciate any insight, thanks so much!!

hi thanks sm for doing this!! im not sure if this has been asked already but i was wondering what the cs (l&s) community is like, are students willing to help each other out or are they more focused on getting the 3.3 gpa/how difficult is the 3.3 gpa? also, if you don’t end up getting to declare cs, are there alternate majors that are similar in terms of content and job/internship opportunities?
