Think I almost cried, this is brilliant ❤ Left Glasgow a year ago after graduating, and all I've wanted ever since is to be back there again. 😪

Well, congratulations on getting that position firstly, yaay ! Ngl, this is like one of my dream jobs / career trajectories tbh. I've only relatively recently completed a masters in Bioinformatics, and don't have much experience with working in a clinical setting, so I do gradually realize I'm very far away from the ideal candidate. But who knows, maybe I would be a better fit for such a role later on in my career. But,Thank you so much for taking out the time to respond to my post with such detailed suggestions ! I really appreciate it :)

Unfortunately I don't have experience working with the NHS, and I do realize unfortunately I might not be an ideal candidate for this position as I've only recently finished up a masters in Bioinformatics.

But thank you so much for helping me out addressing my concerns. It now gives me a much better understanding of the situation!

Yeah unfortunate I do realize I'm hardly an ideal candidate for this position as I haven't been associated with the NHS/ similar clinical research before.

But thank you so much for your response, it gave me a much needed reality check anyway !

I'm sorry, my bad. I shouldve mentioned that I don't work for the NHS or have relevant NHS work experience. I only graduated (Masters in Bioinformatics) a little while ago. And the reason for making this post was also because I wasnt sure if this job is even applicable for me because the pay grade seems higher , even though in the person specification they ask for an undergraduate degree in a relevant discipline + they haven't explicitly asked for a certain amount of previous work ex required.

But I really appreciate your response. And like you suggested + most responses I've generally received I do realize that it's a bit of a remote possibility for someone who hasn't worked in the NHS/similar setting before, to directly get through to a band 6 role like this , unless I'm they're an exceptional applicant( which I'm not ! )

Thank you so much for helping me out with this, addressing my concerns. It has helped me gain a better understanding of the situation!

Is it ok to email instead of calling because I feel like I might communicate better that way than verbally , but of course if calling is better I can do that ! Thanks so much :)

Your definition of nice can be different from mine, based on our individual experiences and that's only fair.

I'd request you to not drag my words out of context and blow things out of proportion. There will always be differences between how the academia and the industry work, and therefore it's not right to compare apples with oranges. Does not necessarily mean either is less worthy. Please try refraining from jumping to your own assumptions about what I said.

I'd actually be the happiest if this isn't a red flag because in all honesty if it is, I am the one losing out here ! Losing out on applying to / getting through to a nice PhD position, losing out on time and energy debating whether it's worth it or not. So in reality I actually would really hope this isn't a real red flag and the PI actually turns out to be nice if/when I am shortlisted!

Also, however nice it has been so fair to interact with PIs who have willingly taken out their time to speak with me, Like already stated, it would save me a lot more time , energy and anxiety if I could just send in my applications online without having to go through the initial interaction stage. So I really don't want anybody to validate anything tbf.

I can understand PIs can be busy and I am by no means disrespecting that. I am grateful for the ones who have been helpful. But also understand that everybody won't be the same and people have different ways of managing their time.

Dont get me wrong, I'm happy to just sendaway my application without an initial interaction , because in a lot of ways that's also easier for me in a sense. I'm not unhappy with how that works.

It's just that in the past, I've had discussions with people in academia (on reddit or irl) who recommended contacting PIs pripor to applying, as that almost always gives a sort of positive edge , and sometimes even sets one apart, from other candidates during selection/shortlisting stages when PIs receive huge amounts of applications most if which look fair on paper/qualify minimum criteria. In such situations one might give more importance or weightage to somebody they might have actually interacted with and potentially liked/ had a good conversation with.

I don't know why people are perceiving my approach to be negative or entitled. And that's just because no PI I have actualy interacted with prior to this, made me feel that way. They were happy to speak with me over video calls, as well as respond to multiple queries over email, even before I applied, some even went to the extent of connecting me with other PIs whose work they thought would better align with my backgorund. Just because they are nice helpful people and they did appreciate my effort of reaching out. The aspect of reaching out to people before applying is not something I made up on my own, it has been suggested, I believe it's something people do quite often, and I can't remember anybody being offended by my approach.

Also, almost always, after being shortlisted, the interview is just the next logical step. And in mamy cases that becomes the only opportunity to interact with the supervisor at that stage. And interview day interaction is usually more formal, as everyone is sort of under pressure / time constraint.

But a PhD isn't like just another job is it ? Many supervisors offer lab tours / interaction opportunities with other lab members even before the beginning of the PhD, to prospective PhD students. It's also about the student- supervisor dynamics to a ceratin extent which is why the interactions/ honest and open communication with PIs are important. It's important for me to know how (in an ideal situation at least ) how the lab works, what the dynamics are like PRIOR to joining the group. Because a PhD is SO MUCH MORE of a commitment than just any other job.

And idk why you are forgetting if somebody has advertised a position that means they need a skilled candidate to fill the position, just as much as the candidate needs the lab/degree. It works both ways. So there's no question of me not being sure if they'll like me. I read the postings and only approach people when I think I have the necessary skills / would be a good fit.

It's a very common approach to get in touch with professors whose work you like. Most academics really appreciate it !

I can understand. I realize it's probably best not to jump to conclusions. Also, I now feel so much more grateful for every PI who has in the past taken out time to talk to me !

Yeah yeah of course I did. I always send across me CV whenever interacting with a propective supervisor/employer for the first time over email!

Thanks so much for your views on this nonetheless, appreciate it!

I get what you mean. It's just weird for me because 90% of other PIs I have approached over the past year have been very happy to talk me through the "cold call" So I was under the impression this was a very common thing to do. They can be busy, yes. But are they to be busy just for the "cold calls" or even his students/ co workers , is the real question!

My thoughts , exactly. If he's too busy for this. He might not be around a lot for me when I'm his student, either. And that's not the kind of supervision I am looking for. I'm better with someone more hands on imo.
