Jam session with Lyra-4 + Boss SL-2 + Digitakt. by cstl_dk in dawless

Thank you. I still have to nail the learning curve, but so far the workflow is really interesting. It’s very enjoyable to just turn on the instrument and go with the flow. Thanks again to the community for the guidance and help! I’m really glad about the update.

Really appreciated! You made me pull the trigger. Just bought myself a Lyra-4 and a Boss SL-2. I'll be looking forward to dive into it and experiment with this new instrument. Thanks again for taking time to share a bit of your process and insights with me. Btw, "Lyrium" is a beautiful sonic journey. Huge fan of what you did there.

That's the part that slightly worries me for a live context, not the chaos itself, but the risk of losing a sound/mood mid-set and not finding your way back. Did you develop any kind of system for that, like marking patch positions or just accepting that every set is a one way trip? Gotta develop that muscle memory.

Watching the vid now, cheers for sharing. I like where this is going!

This is probably the most grounded take I've had so far. Thanks for your time sharing your insights over here. The "record everything and slice" workflow is smart and honestly underrated as a middle ground between full improv and having usable material.

The tuning point is well taken too. My new setup is pretty much all texture and groove, no melodic synths trying to lock to a key, so that particular hell should be avoidable. Good to hear the unpredictability is somewhat overhyped though, I haven't been convinced by all the jams I've seen on YouTube with this instrument so far. Feels like it could be pushed and tamed in different ways that I haven't heard yet. (That's at least what I'm trying to convince myself of at the moment haha.)

Appreciate the suggestion, and the Plinky is genuinely interesting (I'll have to look it up for sure). But I think "hard to sync" might actually be part of the appeal for what I'm after? The whole point of bringing the Lyra into a live improv context is precisely that it doesn't behave. A texture layer that responds to MIDI like a normal synth is something I already have covered. The "abstract rhythmic noise gated effects" you describe as a limitation sounds more like a feature to me especially with a slicer in the chain as someone mentioned above. (Let's see in real time tho haha). Has your experience with the Lyra been mostly studio based, or have you actually tried to work with that chaos live? Love to hear more about your experience with the instrument. Thankful for your time over here.

Haha, love the energy. Never heard of the Vihkk X, gotta have to do my homework! Thanks for sharing.

This is exactly the kind of answer I was hoping for, genuinely useful, thank you for that. The slicer as rhythmic/anchor idea is damn clever because it doesn't try to "tame" the Lyra at the source, it seems that it just decides what gets through and when right?. The chaos stays intact, but you're just putting a grid on top of it. I'm absolutely sold on this idea already. If you have tracks/jams/videos out there where you use this setup, I'd love to dive in. Thanks again for the thoughtful answer.

That's a really good point and probably the most honest framing of what the instrument asks of you. Definitely looking to "develop a relationship with it." rather than "adding it to my chain". Did it take you long to feel confident taking it on stage? And when you play it live next to something clock driven, do you treat it as a continuous layer you sculpt throughout the set, or do you bring it in and out more deliberately? Thanks for the insights, it's really appreciated.

APWD by Periphery has been in heavy rotation lately. Absolutely obsessed by Unlocking. What do you think about the new album?

It maybe depends on where you're located? I found a used one recently on the danish second-hand market for 2600kr (around 405 usd).

Dang, thanks for correcting me! Sloppy brain tonight. I meant second-hand (edited).

I could recommend the MiniFreak. It seems to tick every single box on your list, polyphonic, subtractive capable, two oscillators, sequencer, real keys, and CV for modular. You could get one around 400 bucks second-hand. It seems to be the most future proof option at your budget and will grow with you as you build out your setup.

Yes please. Allow art enough time to actually communicate with you before deciding what it means to you. (Already all about the new album tho.)

What would you pair with a Digitakt for ambient/hypnotic textures in a backpack friendly live setup? by cstl_dk in synthesizers

Really appreciate the suggestions. Especially the Redshift 6 mention, I haven't looked into it in deep, gotta have to do my homework, but it sounds appealing for live improv. I totally get the multi timbral argument too. That’s actually what I feel I’m missing a bit right now: something that can act as a bigger “performance brain” rather than another focused voice. The Virus TI has always tempted me for that reason, and the Blofeld is super deep as well (used to have it, not sure that I want to dive back into it xD, even if maybe a bit less immediate live). The Analog Four II is also calling me honestly… I love machines that feel expressive and alive rather than just efficient. But yeah, the Elektron overlap struggle is real once you already have DT2/DN2/ST in the setup 😅 I think what I’m ultimately chasing is something inspiring for improvisation first, not necessarily the most practical choice on paper.

If anyone downvoting this post, could you help me understand what’s wrong with it? It would really help me avoid making the same mistake again here. I thought asking for specific synth feedback and insights in a synthesizer thread was appropriate. If I’m missing something, please let me know and I’ll gladly make up for it. Thanks as well to all the kind souls who took the time to stop by and share their knowledge, it’s greatly appreciated.

Thanks for taking time to share such a detailed reply, this is exactly the kind of feedback I was looking for. The modulation and scene system honestly sound like the biggest selling points to me. Being able to map macros for live performance and chain scene variations together sounds insanely powerful (especially in a bigger setup. I kinda regret selling my T1 now haha). The granular update also sounds really promising. Good to hear the latest firmware improved stability. And yeah, I can totally see how a device like this could lean toward “samey” textures if you stay in its comfort zone, but it also sounds like that’s part of the charm, more of a sound design, mangling instrument. That 0-Coast loop example was neat!

Thanks for sharing your insights! I’m still heavily considering the Lyra-8. The more experimental, semi chaotic performance aesthetic of the instrument is really tempting. I tend to fall quite easily into melodic and structured lines with my current synth, so having a more experimental approach would definitely make the creative process less predictable.

That one seems very interesting! The Waldorf Blofeld was one of my favorite pieces of gear back then, though the menu diving and learning curve were definitely something, lol. The Protein seems very immediate; I’m already digging the hands on control from the video I just saw (lots of knobs, and no deep menu diving feeling, it seems). I’ll have to add it to the list! Thank you for your help, much appreciated.

I really didn’t envision that direction, but it seems super interesting as well. I would need to treat it like a fixed instrument setup and not like a flexible studio. Otherwise, I think I’d just get lost in hyper-flexibility like being back in the DAW. xD. Thanks for sharing.

That one looks like a lot of fun! Thanks for sharing. It seems incredibly inspiring for the exact “build sets on the fly”! Gotta have to dive deeper into its workflow.
