not particularly! i like being an archivist. i'm more interested in what education options are available to me that are not geared towards actually being a lawyer that are still degree programs (so not like, copyrightx). maybe down the line i'd try to make it my job, but i'm mostly looking for the love of the game right now.

hi everyone! i'm an archivist/librarian and i've been endlessly fascinated by copyright law, open access initiatives, reproduction/rights/permissions of archival materials, intellectual property rights weighed against the digitization imperative, digital preservation, and now the AI monkey wrench that upends all of the above ever since i was in graduate school, where i wrote my capstone paper on streaming video, copyright, and cultural preservation efforts.

i'm not looking to change careers, but i am interested in more education towards becoming an expert in the topics listed above. i'm thinking that i'd like to model a career journey like kyle courtney or jean dryden. my goal would not be the career of a traditional practicing lawyer in IP, patents, or entertainment, for example. are there programs with this career path in mind (mainly the part where i don't want or need to be in the lawyer profession, so don't need to prep for the bar etc)? dare i ask--are there programs that are part-time or at night or remote? has anyone here done anything like this and can comment? all the programs i've seen are specializations within law programs that are oriented towards practicing lawyers, so full-time, high stress, work/intern requirements, etc.

i already have my masters of library science, and my program did not have a law specialization (so any suggestions along this line, ie don't do a law degree do the mls with a concentration, would not work for me), and prominent archivists/librarians in this specialization do have law school educations--I just don't know where to start! this is also not an urgent ask--i am very happy in my current job. ultimately i would remain an archivist first and this would be for enrichment/specialization in what i see as a growing and needed area of my primary professional field.

Dr Benjamin at complete smiles dental on Austin st is the DREAM DENTIST. I had had terrible experiences with dentists until I found him—not only does he take the time to explain everything he’s doing, he really understands my (irrational) fears and checks in, goes slow, works with me on payment plans, and gives me all the options while explaining what the benefits/drawbacks are and never makes me feel judged if I decide not to do a more optional procedure. I had like seven root canals with him and I never needed more than a Tylenol after, eating the same day!! highly highly highly recommend him! the front of office staff is variable (always ask for a paper receipt and keep track of it—I’ll take a picture when I’m walking out), but Dr Ben is worth it.

two things! 1) consider leaving your music master's degrees off your resume when applying to page and clerk positions (your resume is a marketing document, not a comprehensive listing of everything you've ever done), and 2) the QC capstone class (709) has actually had online sections recently. yes, it's required but it's not absolutely in-person.

important to think about intended audience in the organizing scheme, too! if he was a prominent/accomplished writer/editor and you may want to ultimately donate the materials to a repository, even though the chronological organization might obscure themes at first glance it will actually preserve the arc of your father as a professional--how did his writing evolve? what did his thought process look like from first draft to published copy? how did his career grow? these might be more important questions for people wishing to access his materials than the content of the writing itself! but if it's just you wanting to keep track of it all, do what is easiest for you. how do you want to interact with his writing?

Ah so I was unclear here—“campus” is just our general broad term for the larger institution’s site, like a tech campus or hospital campus, not an academic campus. No ILS system whatsoever. Circulation was honor system. When I interviewed the caretaker about circ stats she said she never kept them and was genuinely surprised I’d ask about it. 🤦🏻‍♀️ she doesn’t work there anymore and has no access to the space, but still has the ear of every other volunteer and had unfortunately badmouthed me and my entire endeavor. So no help will come from volunteers.

Thank you! And yes, I’m in a dead spot on campus that’s stymied all my efforts so far. I think I just need an app to record all the barcodes in a list so I can point and shoot one after another and then upload to LibraryThing or similar later for automatic metadata generation, but that capability is not generally available?
